In an ideal world, it should "be enough" to simply create... and in olden days, many artists had "patrons" who simply sponsored them to create. That said, people also tend to forget that thousands of aspiring artists back then did NOT find patrons and their dreams ended nowhere.
One of my personal concerns about art and its future is the decrease in the number of "patrons of the arts" out there... both as buyers and as sponsors. Artists have to be far more self-reliant today than even 150 years ago. Back then, it was "cool" to sponsor art... these days, rich people want to sponsor sports figures.
