Water's Fine progblog #1

in #art7 years ago

Got this request on Discord from @kubbyelizabeth:

Happy to help out a steemate where I can, I agreed and asked her what she would like me to draw. The answer:

and then when I asked when she needed it by, it was along the lines of "whenever it's done".

Easiest client in the universe to work for! XD

Steemit has this analogy with the steempower, where the plentiful new accounts with not much power (such as yours truly) are referred to as "minnows", holders of more SP are called "dolphins" and so of course the people with stonking huge wallets are "whales".

Kubby likes pink so I decided to do a dolphin mer and a cute little minnow. Being humanoid I needed bases. And then I got carried away with the minnows. And then decided there should also be a representative whale.

What's that? The whale doesn't look that big? How's this?

Yeh all right my bases look mildly terrifying especially when some of them are all bent out of shape. It looks a bit better sketched over in light blue on the water base. Then I go over with super thin neat lines that I darkened here just so they can be seen, as the opacity is usually reduced a lot so I can make sure I have nice edges when colouring.

And where I'm up to at the moment which is done base colours, the "blood layers" (which are red and blue layers in either overlay or multiply mode that help with the way I see colour), some textures and have started patterning the minnows.

This post also appears on my blog.

I'm saving up for a new focus cat (looking to get a mum and kitten package from Cat Haven) and new focus cat supplies, so upvotes and resteems are more appreciated than usual :) (but only if you feel like it!)

Thanks for looking! ^_^

And come join us in the #teamaustralia Discord channel :D

OMG Ryi this is awesome! Although it looked a bit creepy at the beginning without the colours 😂 love it ❤️🙌🏼 @kubbyelizabeth will be stoked I bet!

Thanks ^_^ LoL yeh my bases look a bit creepy in their featurelessness XD I certainly hope she does!

Miss you my friend, hope your health is better!

Missing you too! Feeling much better, just been busy working now 😝

Nice! I like the finished product Ry.

Thanks ^_^ Not done yet, still got to finish the rest of the minnows and then do a million lighting layers XD (may get away with three each but depends on how deep this is and what kind of water caustic insanity I need to get my head around).

Woohoo! That looks nice! A little more definition in the details especially with the scales and it's perfect :D If only all clients are like that hahaha! One could dream! Looking forward to the process video for this, I'm kind of expecting some water-themed music to accompany it haha!

Cetaceans don't have scales XD I know I'm calling the merminnows minnows but these ones are kind of mini-cetaceans and don't have scales either XD

It's got a way to go before it's done, I still have a million (or maybe about six or so) lighting layers to go and then 2-3 colour overlays! I don't think I'll hit perfect but hopefully it will be good enough when it's done :D I'm actually kind of flattered people like it in its flat partway state ^_^

You probably would have laughed at the 10min of angsting I did on whether or not I should give them fish tails and if I did if they were to have an awkward adolescence spent trying not to swim in circles as the flukes rotated from vertical to horizontal or perhaps whether they should chuck a Pokemon and just flash evolve into the dolphin form...aaargh why do I have to give absolutely everything a backstory where one doesn't already exist XD

No water themed music sadly, just my usual fare. This is the first time I'm doing a process video for an entire render like this (well almost entire, I was partway through setting up the 3d bases when it occurred to me that this was a good opportunity to record a rendered piece from close enough to the beginning to the end), I may be close to 10hrs now, so not looking forward to doing the music track x_x may have to be a pipe separated list rather than the usual bullets!

Ohhh I didn't realize you were going down the mammal root. The merminnows look like a force to be reckoned with, with scales or none! I fully trust your process.

I probably would have hahaha! What am I saying? I'm laughing right now hahaha!

Haha!! Maybe you can trim it down by adding intermission cards like "10 minutes later" then skipping to it haha!

I am thinking about adding screens with the session numbers on it but will see what plays out after I've timelapsed the videos down. Already planning on just basically running the song clips and seeing where they end up and not even going to try matching them to their sessions XD

Haha that would be fine either way. I get how being too nitpicky might not be worth it here. As long as your happy with the finished result, I'm sure it would be enjoyable to watch :)
