A Headless horse torsos is the centrepiece of the Art Gallery of South Australia's Melrose Wing. The $300,000 sculpture, called "We are all flesh" by Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere, was chosen by Art Gallery director Nick Mitzevich and funded by 24 members of the gallery's Contemporary Collectors group. "I want art to change people's lives ... not to be a passive pursuit," Mr Mitzevich said.
The dead horse torso has had some nasty reviews go up on Trip Advisor and other travel sites.
A kid's natural reaction is quite interesting -- upon seeing the hanging horse, my son ran towards it and posed for a photo. As adult observers, I think some have a notion our art confronts children. What we forget is the next generation has moved on from our notion of art. The torso is not confronting nor is it a passive pursuit for them.
It was just "flesh" as the artist wanted us to see it...the little child has a more dramatic notion in his mind. He runs to the torso and becomes a carnivores for a pose. He understands it's "flesh" and that "we are all flesh" probably. How very interesting.
Some kids may find it disturbing. Depends on the age, etc
