I picked up this nifty sketch pad at the thrift store for 50 cents a couple weeks ago. It still has most the pages and is in fine shape.
I discovered a few years back that I'm kind of ok at outdoor chalk art, but when it come to drawing or painting on a page I am terrible. I need to learn some basic technique, that much I know. Things like blending and shading and crosshatch...
I also know I just need to start drawing if I'm going to learn anything, so the other day I set up a model, got on youtube, and did some drawing.
First I got the outline down.

I used colored pencils for this drawing and one thing I learned is they don't blend like chalk. This leaves a lot of my lines from coloring visible. I'm sure there is a way to not have this happen, which I'll learn eventually.
Another difficulty I had was shading and shadows. I had a hard time trying to make the shirt darker on the right side of the drawing (as it is in the picture). One of my kids was home so I asked him for some help. He's a very good, self-taught artist, so he showed me how to shade the opposite arm.
Overall I'm happy with the result. The shape is decent and it's a pretty good representation of the model, Randy from South Park, but I still have a lot to learn.
Youtube videos are helpful but I feel I need a live teacher to help me with specific questions. I'm sure there is some online class I could take, and that would probably be fine as long as I can talk to the instructor. Maybe there is something at the community college I could take?
