The look in his eye(s) told me his rage was reaching the boiling point...
Hello people!
Drew something that took a bit of time, like 3 days or so, stepped into the fourth one too, I present you one raging orc:
TEARS FOR BLOOD,RAGE FOR HONOR
That's how I named this particular illustration, imagined a war thorn battling orc that just had enough, not your regular brute, just that one that tried to look away until one point in time when he could not watch anymore and had to do something.
About the art:
I really wanted to show anger and scars from the battlefield here, went into details for a few days, worked on war paint ideas, bones, muscles, facial structure, expression, armor, imagined rocks flying around, smoke in the background.
I spent time with Photoshop, software that I used to make this one come true, used drawing pad to put it all into work and gave myself a time to figure things out, make pauses, think about color, shadows, effects, lines.
I am having a bit of a hard time at the moment, cooking from the fridge, whatever I can find since I quit the regular job because it took a lot of hits at my health and social life. Now, it's a bit of a struggle, but the work on improving myself in art will not stop man, it will not stop. So it's kinda representation of my will power at the moment, I guess :D
Here is the process:
The lines, sketches, figuring it out. Leaving it for the next day, then stepping back in. If you don't commit yourself there won't be any results, so I pushed this one, it was a proof to myself too. I was satisfied with the lines after many hours that gave back the reward!
Added a basic color here, so I can add more color on top of that with a base understanding of where it leads since green takes the biggest part of the illustration, it was logical to put it on first.
Basic color - (not the base color like the previous one). Here I added everything on top of that green and tryed to give it a little sense of life, movement and effectiveness of the emotion.
Neck and Back! It is such a big part of this piece, so my shadow work was focused on pointing out that the head is in front of everything else. Started doing regular shadowing too.
Working to get the complete shadows that represent the realness of this composure, working good with the life of drawing. After shadows I jumped in with the lights, and pinpointed some really important parts that stick out, it also adds to the whole picture. Some minor lighting work and making those colors lively.
Adding those background effects, working with the color, adding rage to the drawing, adding rocks flying around and minor eye correction, there were some line cleanups here too, and shadow and lighting work on those pebbles in the air. Finished it here and was really happy with the outcome!
Alright, hope it was fun, maybe educational or helpful, thank you for your time!
I am a comic book artist and geek from Serbia, doing illustration work for 15 years now, really enjoying it!
Sometimes is better to quit a job and struggle with money than let your health and social life suffer. There are so many people doing what they do just for money (I was like this as well) but when you realize you don't love your job and you feel bad every morning walking to the office, then it's the time to consider changes. I am sure that you will find something that you love OR that you will become a famous artist :) Or maybe becoming a famous artist is what you really want :)
I totally understand the rage of this orc. He is missing one eye, one tooth, he has scars everywhere so he is simply fed up. But I think that what he really needs is a nice long hug :)
You captured his emotions greatly. The rage is real and I like the rocks flying everywhere around him. I actually feel a little bit sorry for him :)
Thank you for sharing! It was great to see your progress photos too!
I agree, it was really like that, no social life at all, depression, health issues, payment was fine but, there were a lot of consequences ad I did not really like the job, all night shifts, like 5-6 days in a row. The day was stolen so there was not that morning feeling, and one free day was used to sleep. Hardly had the chance to illustrate. Thank you so much for your inspiring words, means a lot!
Haha yeah, I imagined him like that too, in need of a hug and rest from all the battle, he just snapped but inside is still a kind soul.
Have a great great day!

Got damn! that's a good line job. Usually, the line to be used isn't usually taken into account, since it's only treated as the outline and nothing else, without thinking that it's a valuable resource and that through the line many things can be transmited.
Thank you! I really, really appreciate the comment like this! I love that style, it's kinda chaotic and all, but it really has to be planned trough and pulled off, really glad you dig the lines here!
That is indeed a raging orc warrior. I like how you painted all those folds in his face, he looks really angry and yelling fiercely at his enemy.
Congratulations for your curie vote ^_^.
Thank you! Really glad you like it, your art is awesome!
Really nice orc drawing, Rez! You certainly captured the orcishness well, energy and rage and might oozing off the screen ! Very nice ! The step by step is also presented nicely <3 <3
Congrats for curie, too !
Veryspider, your comments and presence here is one of the things that keeps me going on steemit, always much attention to everything, you rule, Thank you!
@theartofrez, what a scary warrior. You are right, he look like want to take revenge. His mouth is scary and like want to wallop someone. You are very creative and good in illustrate the painting well.
I love read comic book. The art in comic is different with other art. In average how long it took you to finish one piece of work? It look tedious to me because need to take care a lot of details.
Hello @oliviackl , yeaah looks kinda scary :D
The comic art is very different from other approaches, you are right and the process is kinda different too, This one took 3 days, in average i can do one piece in a day or so, that is the most common time lapse
wow, that consider very fast with average one piece a day. When you draw comic, i guessed you need to have a story line before you start to draw right?
Yeah, and can do about two scenes a day, something like that, with the story in mind, so its 3 days for a page, something like that :)
I was looking into his eye, it's like he's looking back at me, and I can see deep into his soul. I feel loke he's a nice fella from deep within, something just brought out the rage in him.
I love the step by step, not that I'm an artist - I can't even draw decent stick people for an image. Lol. But seeing your step by step, you let people like me appreciate a drawing like this even more. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much! Really glad you noticed the eye, in the beginning it was not like that, like in the final picture. And I imagined him as a kid soul, so changes were made to make that eye an important part of the picture. Really glad you like the process! <3
You certainly succeeded in showing the anger and I like how he lost part of his a tooth. The goblin(?) kinda reminds me of Warcraft series.
Wish to get a drawing pad for myself one day so I can directly draw on computer.
Thank you! Really glad you like it! My advice is to find someone that owns a drawing pad and try it first, many people do not like the approach, it either works or not. If it does not work than scanning art and making digital adjustments does the job nice :D
Thanks for the advice.
No prob :)
Oh that's a long years of experience!
Do you work in a firm or company?
I guess you can work on your own using your skills and talent.
You're your own boss so to speak.
Yeah, I dunno, worked for a bit, then switched, now I'm my own boss, but looking for a steady work or project :)
Oh!
You'll find it the least you expect it in the right time boy!
You earn a living on your artwork?
But you're still single?
I guess you're still young.
Oh, gonna find it, like that, usually it goes like that :D I'm in a relationship, living in my apartment, 31 yrs old, but there are bills to pay, food etc :D :D Regular struggle
Oh!
I wish all the best in you boy!
And more babies or children in the future lol
Good luck on your journey!
You'll make it!
Have a great day!
Thanks Man!!
You're very much welcome man!
Keep going, keep working, keep moving, keep doing!
Keep all things up!
You're on your way to your destination!
You must have a very positive perspective to be using "hard time" for a beautiful art like this. Though the theme of anger and war does not appeal to me, the drawing in itself is great with all the details you have in there.
I suppose you are monetizing your drawings, do you? If not, maybe it is time to think about it especially now that you quit your regular job.
Thank you! Well yeah, I am in a tough spot at the moment, monetizing some of it, mostly drawing to further upgrade the skill set. I draw cute fluffy and funny stuff for money, so this is kinda the other channel to it all :D
That is a very good channel to express yourself in arts while earning from them. You are still blessed to be hitting two birds with one stone. So cheer up even more! 😊
Thanks, very kind of you!! Will do :D
Bless you with such a very positive spirit! :)
You too for your kindness!
This is what I would call something "Morbid" look at that, the expressions are great. the look of the character really conveys a message.
You have 15 years of experience and you know how to prove it. I loved the creative process. <3
Thank you! Really glad you like it, especially the process part, sharing all that is still new to me :D
I have been amazed with your great power to transmit the fury of the character, to me in particular I would make it difficult to make that illustration in photoshop, extra point for it. has its degree of difficulty.
I love the depth you have achieved with the shadows and lights in an opaque way because that is the intention of the colors you have chosen.
I feel the roar of their fury, you can really appreciate how you enjoy while you work, no matter how many hours you spend in front of the computer has its reward.
Really glad you like it! Yeah, Photoshop can be a bit more difficult than the paper itself, but it has the undo button, that way is quicker than the eraser :D Glad you like the colors, was really thinking about it. Oh man, I really enjoyed it! :D Have an awesome day!
I'm having trouble coloring and this post just makes my hours spent work look like I never learned anything. How could something this so conceptually simple be so difficult for me to execute? Honestly, I'm battling between making my drawings look 2D and try for semi-realism :/
This is cool stuff @theartofrez I wish I had you skills for doing illustrations like these :D
Thank you so much, glad you like it, and found it interesting, now let me help a bit :D Try avoiding pure black for lines, go with a dark dark gray, almost black, I went trough your posts to see. That's the first advice, second one is, to try and make the colors a bit more calm, when you pick orange or red for example, tone it down to grey a bit, make it less intense. After that it's a lot easier to work with shadows and highlights :)
I'll take those into consideration but don't expect me to get it right in case you happen to notice my future posts. :P
It has something to do with trial and error and not being able to get regular constructive feedbacks. I will do some trial runs on your advice and hope I'll get better grasp at the values.
No prob, just trying to help out, take your time, I studied illustration from my age of 16, now I'm 31 and still learning :D Takes a lot of time but, the results get better :)
It looks like he wanna devour someone or something, I better get out of the way... Lol!
Even though he looks like a monster, filled with rage, he looks hurt as well. Maybe he has been taken advantage of and hurt that's why he is so?
I love how you captured the rage in his eyes and the hint of hurt at the same time. Great illustration.
Thank you so much! Yeah I think all that pain moved him, but still hurts him to act on it
Yeah... Hurting people too do hurt alot....
Wow you are a great illustrator and to see his process is very rewarding, my sister is a designer and from time to time she illustrates for other people, I have seen her work and I know it is a very complicated job. I love your illustration, showing those traits of anger so well achieved, the color that ulizastes is great very characteristic and iconic .. A big hug @theartofrez
Thank you so much! Really glad you enjoyed it, it is really a pleasure communicating here, big hug!
Ok, that is one very scary looking orc! But most orcs are scary haha (based on LOTR and The Hobbit series). You know what, I am happy you quit your job. It is totally not worth it to let the job suck the life out of you. A job may pay well but what is the point when you are not happy right? And when you don't earn as much, you spend less and sufficiently which is enough to live a happy life doing the things you love :) Take care there @theartofrez. I'm sure good and better things will come to you. Just keep doing what you love :)
Thanks for the support! Filled with positive energy here, all thanks to you nice people! Thank you! Gonna get up and try even harder :)
Try harder but remember to enjoy doing what you do and stay happy! :) with art like yours and that many years of experience, you can definitely go the distance. Happy weekend there @theartofrez :)

Thank you <3
Howdy from Texas theartofrez! hey that Orc looks like he could rip your head off and eat it like a cherry! wow, a total explosion of insane rage is what I see, I think you nailed it and I'm glad you stuck with it and persevered!
This is a great post and a well deserved curie vote. Do you specialize in mythological creatures?
Thank you so much!!! Oh yeah, love them, really inspiring to illustrate :D
