It is great to see the structural development of your sculpture - I am looking forward to see it finished.
Welding was one of my jobs at the CP Rail Mechanical Department (in Canada), but rarely (if ever) did I think to use it artistically. I was too busy painting, but it always intrigued me.
The odd time, on the night shift when there were no supervisors watching, we would weld some scrap together to make something useful, like candlesticks and sometimes some whimsical garden sculpture. Once I helped a colleague put together a garden gate out of rebar and old plow shares, resembling a dragon, once it was finished.
Another time, we cut up a test plate, removing the plate and just leaving the bead, then we glued plywood plates on it, made a few burn splatters, and called it: "We weld anything, even wood".
