It's worth every penny. The Intuous Pro line is as good (just without a screen). I used that for many years, and they come in all price ranges depending on size.

For photography, I'd be looking for a tablet. The Microsoft Surface Pro looked like a good fit, too, but Wacom is way ahead of them in touch sensitivity and graphics, or at least they used to be. It's been awhile since I did any research on the technology front that wasn't camera bodies or lenses lol.
There's a few laptops with embedded wacom tech, you should check those out. But one thing - external wacom does not age, laptop or tablet will be obsolete in 3 years.
