Straight to the point, and true. In catastrophic events, preppers preferentially survive.
Take heart from history's lessons. Every time Option 1 happens, society eventually comes around. Venal overlords can't run everything alone, and can't work together with peers, because they're venal and seek to be 'the' overlord. They eventually cut each other's throats, and folks get out from under their malicious thumbs.
The less of Option 1 the better, though, and the more ready we are to provide our own goods and services, the less harm Option 1 can do us.
