The background and horizon are very important for landscapes. I've made the mistake of starting with the foreground, the tree here, then adding background elements. This makes it harder to make things seamless. Perspective is also important if you want to make the painting very realistic. Adding detail like the flowers and the mountain textures also adds to the look.
Here is the stylus I use. It has two ends, one with generic tip and the other for more detail and control.
