Thrilled about finding an art competition, and even more thrilled that it was a no theme, this week!
So I stuck to my much loved ocean theme. I find it suits my style very well. Watercolor and ink.
so I've tried numerous ways of doing my art style, but I always end up preferring to do it with the watercolor first, and secondly the lineart or ink over it.
This was my initial sketch I did. it's always very loose, but composition and balance is what I'm looking for mostly at this stage.
Mr whale doesn't look very inviting at the watercolor stage either. but I'm making sure I know where I want my shading, and I have movement in color and shapes on the paper for my lines with the ink which is next.
A close up of the ink linework .

@saltyseagull
So you do the line work in the end so to speak?
Looks really cool by the way.

Thanks. Yes, it's all done at the end. On top of the watercolor.

I love how you use colors first. It reminds me the paintings of Reverón. Keep going! beautiful art!
Being mostly self taught and not well versed about many artists, I was intrigued by your artist reference. Thank you for that. Much appreciated.

Hi saltyseagull,
Visit curiesteem.com or join the Curie Discord community to learn more.
This is one beautiful whale. I never thought of combining line art and water color medium in this matter. I think I just found another inspiration for a technique but using digital media, thanks for the inspiration! :D
It would be interesting to see the technique used in digital media. Can't wait to see it.

very elegant whale the ink colors and the shades are amazing and the details are really precious great work
I love whales, and I love this painting, these different shades of blue are so beautiful, and I loved the idea of you tracing those beautiful and neat lines, it gave a fantastic touch .. Many luck in the contest, a big hug @saltyseagull
This whale is made from intricate beauty and grace of lines, I like both the inked part and the splash of colours that made the whole of this majestic animal.

What a beautiful whale ! The motion and the energy are captured so well in this one that I can feel its freedom of playfulness :D Gorgeous picture, @saltyseagull :)
Congratulations for Curie, as well <3
Wow nice work. :) I miss doing art now seeing what you did here. Haha. Haven't been doing any lately.
The line work looks cool. Will you be adding some background to it soon? I feel like it would look more awesome with some kind of backdrop too. :)
Thanks. I hope you do find the time to do some art. I know it's not easy. Luckily right now is school holidays.
I don't normally add background. Perhaps I'll try that someday and see if I like it. Thanks.

If I had a new phone I'd be happy to add a background but heck I haven't gotten around to buying a new one. Lol. I like doing art on a mobile phone than using my old computer...
Anyway it's fine, it looks good enough to hang somewhere. :)
