Good day Steemians! For my today's artwork, I have decided to stick with using graphite pencils and charcoal. I am going to draw the main casts of one of my favorite animé movie, My Neighbor Totoro.
Have you guys seen the animé movie "my Neighbor Totoro"? If you haven't, let me just give you a little background of the story.
My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) is a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. University professor Tatsuo Kusakabe and his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, move into an old house to be closer to the hospital where the girls' mother, Yasuko, is recovering from a long-term illness. One day, Mei sees two white, rabbit-like ears in the grass, she discovers two small spirits who lead her through a briar patch and into the hollow of a large camphor tree. She meets and befriends a larger version of the same kind of spirit, which identifies itself by a series of roars that she interprets as "Totoro". Tatsuo tell her that Totoro is the "keeper of the forest"
My cousin Jolla, always watch this film no matter how many times she has already watched it. I can't blame her, this is a pretty good film, and Totoro is so cute!!
Anyway, enough with the background of the story, and let's start with my artwork. And here is the step by step process:
Vellum Board
Mechanical Pencil
Graphite Pencil 6B and 8B (Staedler)
Charcoal Pencil
Kneaded Eraser
Brush
Cottonbuds (for blending)
First step is I draw the gridline. This helps me with drawing the outline of the photo.
Second step is drawing the outline of the photo. I will show you all the process of the outline:
Now the outline is done.
I erased all the gridlines.
I traced the two girls and the handle of the umbrella using 8B pencil. I also used the 8B pencil for his eyes.
The I used the charcoal pencil to fill out the photo of the Satsuki.
I did the same process with Mei. I leave some part for the highlights.
Then I used a flat brush on the circle on Totoro's belly.
I used 6B pencil for the leaf on Totoro's head. Just lightly sketch the pencil then blend it using a cottonbuds.
I used charcoal pencil for his nose.
For the clouds, I used 6B pencil. Just lightly sketch the pencil in a circular motion. I didn't blend it for the effect of the clouds.
Then I started to fill out Totoro's body using 6B pencil. Again, just lightly sketch the pencil in a circular motion. I did it in cicular motion for the even or fair tone.
I added another layer on the same spot until I achieved my desired skintone/color.
Then I used charcoal pencil at the bottom of his body then I blended it using cottonbuds. Then I added another layer on his head using 6B again to achieve a gradient effect or fading effect.
I used charcoal pencil at the bottom or the grass.
Then I used charcoal pencil to fill out his right arm and face.
Then again, I blended it using cottonbuds to achieve a gradient effect.
Now my artwork is done!
I just added some finishing touches and my artwork is done!

Great artwork thanks for sharing! How long did the whole process take you?
Thank you. It took me 3days maybe. Because I have other things to do around the house. But maybe I can finish it for just a couple of hours.
Great work!!
Thank you...
Nice art.
Thank you po
its very help full i have done almost same
I'm absolutely obsessed with anything Ghibli! And I adore your shading, I really can't get that right so I tend to avoid much depth in my art, I feel like it wasn't for me and tiny details will always be my biggest enemy. Great art! xx
Thank you so much for your compliment.. You're right, shading is very hard to do. I am still struggling with shading.
This is so nice ! Great artwork :D
Thank you so much.
