Nikolai Aleksandrovich Yaroshenko was born in Poltava on 13 December 1846 in the family of a Russian army officer. He chose a military career, studied at the Pontifical Academy of Poltava, and then at the Mikhailovsky Military Art Academy in St. Petersburg. Petersburg.

Even in the cadet corps, Yaroshenko attracted the attention of artist Ivan Zaitsev. In St. Petersburg, Nikolay was systematically involved in drawing and painting under the direction of Adrian Volkov, and also studied drawing at the Society for the Encouragement of Artists and attended the evening class at the Imperial Academy of Arts. For about 20 years he worked as a manager at a stamping shop at St. Cartridge Factory. Petersburg.

In 1876, he became a major member of the artist group, Wanderers. He was nicknamed "Wanderers' conscience" for honesty and adherence to principles. In 1892, Yaroshenko retired as the major general. Several years he spent in Poltava and Chernigov, as well as in Kislovodsk, in the Caucasus Mountains, where he moved because of poor health.

He painted many portraits, genre and landscape paintings. For his creative life, the artist created more than 400 paintings and more than 1000 images.

During the last two decades of the XIX century, he was one of the leading realist artists. Yaroshenko's friendship with senior youth in the 1970s and 1980s enabled him to create clear and honest images. Some paintings may serve as illustrations for Chernyshevsky's works.

On July 7, 1898, Nikolai Yaroshenko died of pulmonary tuberculosis in Kislovodsk. She is buried there.

It included 100 paintings, 23 work albums with pictures, 4 statues of Nicholas Yaroshenko himself and a significant collection of the works of his colleague Peredvizhniki.
