It is a series of oil paintings by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh that stand out for the thoroughness of their strokes, as the artist used to paint with strong and expressive brushstrokes. The paintings show sunflowers in the different stages of his life, which allowed him to use the full range of yellows.
Of the series there are three similar paintings with fifteen sunflowers in a vase, and two with twelve sunflowers, also in a vase. The paintings were painted on canvases measuring about 93 x 72 cm. His house in Arles with its yellow façade, together with the burning Mediterranean sun in the south of France, was the source of inspiration for this series.
