AskSteem: How would you describe Steem in your own words?

in #asksteem6 years ago

So there were some discussions earlier about how to present Steem in an elevator pitch, although that already means you have to compress a lot of things into a short time period which would be a really difficult thing since there is so much going on here. The question did make me wonder how people see Steem in general though.

I understand many who are here may be experiencing blockchain tech for the first time and even if many probably never find the time to take the extra step to find out why this technology is so important in this day and age and what the real differences are.

I wanted to make a post asking my followers how they would explain Steem to someone they know in their own words. If you feel uncomfortable with some parts about it thinking you don't know well enough you don't have to force it out of you but do understand that no one is going to judge you. Many who have been here for longer have gone through the same thing and over time it has only gotten more and more complicated while trying to keep the main point of it as simple as possible. As I said many may not even have dug deeper into it and have gotten comfortable with the way things work now and how they are evolving to bother looking as to why it works and that's fine, that means Steem is working way better than most other blockchains at allowing that to be the case.

With account creation being made easier and easier and more and more different accounts at the right stake being able to claim free accounts daily it is going to be a very interesting time to see the growth of Steem over the next couple years in users. So many new people we will have to teach and answer questions to reminding us of how difficult things seemed in the beginning before we got into it.

AskSteem: How would you describe Steem in your own words to a friend you want to invite?

Sort:

I describe Steemit as "a social media platform where the participants are rewarded instead of a hosting company"

I describe Steem as "a high-performance public blockchain that supports one of the largest social media sites where the participants are rewarded instead of a hosting company"

Yes, of course there is more to the story, more usages, etc. But elevator pitches must be in terms the audience understands and appreciates, so they want to ask more.

Well, I have done this many times already. Not all are interested to hear but there are moments when one listens to my raving of it. I say, "It's like Facebook on a more intelligent level. It is my bank, side business, retirement fund, and wonderful social media that grant variety almost in a limitless way. I tell them that it has converted the centralized apps we all use on the daily, into a Decentralized platform and income and livelyhood that creates a structure of oneself as a resume for the rest of ones life.

Wow, that was actually really well put. Nice!

Steem can be whatever you make of it as there is very little limitation on what can be created upon it. In time it could become a developer's playground, a user's business and a consumer's go to source for information and entertainment. What is the best part is that at all levels an individual can invest in various ways and own a piece of the network itself and enable others to get a piece of real estate for themselves.

  • To me, #steem is a creative platform that allows its users an enabling environment to mine their (users) creativity.
  • A platform where everyone can share their content despite their literacy level, yet, still get rewarded.
  • A platform where fun and friends bring financial joy.
  • A platform where financial value is attached to the meanest of centent in as much as its unique (not copied).
  • A social blogging platform with least need for IT talent. You can just share what you can - video, text, photo..

Steem is a place where one can put money in to control inflation.

It seeks to be a place where users can work for tips. (POB)

Steem is a republic. We elect and trust witnesses for security.

DPOS is the only system with account recovery.

I might come up with a more thought-out reply later on, but I still like how I described it in my tweet to Bittrex:

An attention economy that works so well people can't stop bitching at each other about it.

Sign up and I'll give you 30 cents a day for writing a comment on my post.

That actually worked for a few people, then they left 🤷

I've tried different approaches, depending on the background of the person i'm talking to.

Stuff that sweat-coin app, there's one on Steem and I can pay you way more on my own!

Blockchain is the future, it's going to disrupt everything! (with video included).

It is hard going, even with constant hand-holding. I'll try again next month when I move to a place there are actually people :)

Moving! So, the inevitable is happening :) hope your bones have cracked back into place! It is tricky to describe Steem! I'd love a way to explain it that was more relatable. Personally, it's intuitive! Easy to see the future and the benefits of blockchain -- especially Steem. But, tricky to put it into words for ppl who are comfortable in their structured mundane (slavelike robotic illserving but they dont even know it they actually can not see the fruit for the trees ---but maybe i have it all wrong-- who knows haha) life.

Yes I am :) (tough to find replies today isn't it with Steemworld seemingly not doing the business!)

I think you have to explain things on almost a person by person basis, depending on tech knowledge, interests, etc, so you can focus your pitch on something that turns a light on for them. It's tough going though for sure!

Steemit: Come for the interactions/community, stay for the drama/popcorn. Oh, and make some cryptocurrency or something...

I've told them it's a blockchain which is mostly used for different social media platforms like a blogging platform and something for photos, videos etc. and at best you might be able to earn a little bit while doing something you enjoy without censorship.

Haven't worked so far. I don't want to share my identity on Steem for most people and the ones I'm sharing it with are mostly less social people.

I saw it described as "like reddit, but with money voting." That was enough to peak my interest and I signed up the same day. (Nov. 2017)

Today I suppose it might be more accurate to update that to something like...

" reddit, but with money voting plus games and apps which you can earn money while playing."

Hey, you know that time you ranted on Facebook and you got in a huge fight with your cousin's husband? How would you like to rant anonymously, fight with strangers and have non-awkward Christmas dinners forever more?

Steem makes you the co-owner of the social web that you help create where users decide who adds value to the platform they share.

-Hi man !
-Hi !

-You like writing and blogging and you also like create movies right ?
-Yes this is my hobby, you know it.
-Yes. What if I told you, you can get money for this ?
-No shit man...
-Come on. I will show you steemit.

That is a true story :)

Steem is a blockchain social media blogging site where you can blog and earn. You can blog about serious stuffs and stuffs that not so serious stuffs. Just be free on the steem blockchain. Basically just be social on steem while you blog.

I will say that steem is a blockchain with a lot of scalability features that other interesting apps can be built on, but most importantly it has a limitless usage and also it is also a blockchain platform for content creators and publishers to earn from their hard work through a proof of brain concept.

Steem also can be the future blockchain for media publisher's around the world to integrate their platform on as well

I use the simplest relatable term to invite people to steemit. Some folks might say using money to lure them is not good for the steem ecosystem in the long run but I still think it is the best approach. Money is a language understood by even the dumbest of humans. Inviting people to steemit and inviting a potential investor to invest in steem are two different things. Both content creators and investors are need for the growth of steem and some content creators actually end up investing and vice versa.

Having said that, below is a screenshot of me inviting a seemingly talented writer from twitter to steemit. Enjoy!

Steem could be everything. Literally verything. We are not there yet, we actually have a long way to go but...

It could be an artist's shelter, a writer's paradise, a company's safest payment method...

All we need to determine is what we want it to be, and not what it is right now

This is a great topic for discussion! It's a such a barrier to entry when i cant even come up with something to easily describe Steem like an elevator speech! I got into it because i am a visionary person that is very curious. I saw my friend @lyndsaybowes' posts she was seeing her passions of making music come to life through "decentralization" and "blockchain" technology. Two words i had previously learned a bit about. She also promised support which was a huge help. I wouldn't likely have suck out the learning curve without it. Also, i had a deep longing for alternative social media to fb. I'd had enough of it and wanted something new. Honestly, i came here for ideas for elevator speaches! Steem is such a user friendly way to get involved with cryptos! I was interested in cryotos for years and had no idea to get them! So, i'd likely use the catch words, cryptos, blockchain, decentralized and social media to begin to describe it. I know ppl see the steemit posts i share on my fb feed but ppl just dont get curious enough to try it. Well actually a few have but have not stuck with it eventhough i offer to help them out. But, i think the general public needs more education in terms of why they's want to change. So many ppl are so comfortable with their routine and busy with their lives the wanting something different is just beyond them. This is a great follow-up to @theycallmedan's recent post which highlights @surfermarley's 60 second Steem contest!! Hope to get more ideas to help promote this platform! But, not too soon i want to stack up a bunch more SP first!! Haha

One day a little fairy came to me; tiny, sweet and with a luminous golden light aura. She said, I should follow her into the hidden land called Steemit. I asked: What is Steemit? - The fairy just replied: You will see my son. Just put one foot before the other and let the steemian stream of life form your own opinion.

mystical fairy tale answer end

I tell them straight.

You gotta get in on Steemit, it's the new BEBO.

Works everytime.

Steem is a decentralized platform, which give you possibility to earn money, when you make good content. Is great alternative for centralized social media and much better to be part of great community. There is no hate, people love each other. You can get big upvotes for making great content and you can support other great creators with your votes and curation trials. It's amazing!

I have mixed emotions about Steem at the current moment.

In one sense, I see some major advancements in a positive direction right now, and there has never been a shortage happenings that touch my heart. A great example would be @dfacademy, check out those kids working hard to achieve a dream. This is just one example of what Steem has to offer to the world.

On the other hand, I still see much of the same flag wars and backwards thinking that has kept Steem in a rut for so long, as well as really hard working Steemian's that seem to go unrecognized by bigger accounts. Of course, there is no true measure for what one might consider "quality" right? Because it's relative and based on personal perception, but when you are also perceptive yourself, and able to see tight knit groups that seemingly ignore the hard working small guys, it leaves a bitter taste. Do I have a bitter taste about Steem right now, and seeing quality posters not earn what I think they should? Yes I do. Have I busted my ass here enough to have earned the right to say it? Absolutely.

Nice thoughts here @acidyo. Thank you.

It depends rather a lot on who I am talking to... which mostly means explain this as you would to a 7-year old, or "explain this as you would to my grandma."

In "general" my pitch goes something like "Steem is a social content environment similar to what you'd get if you combined Facebook, Instagram, twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud, Pinterest, WordPress and a few others under a single umbrella... but UNlike all of the above which have a big central corporation that makes money off your efforts, with Steem YOU have the opportunity to be rewarded for your efforts and even become part 'owner' in the system you are part of, a bit like a co-op."

I don't even touch on blockchains or cryptos and all that unless we get to the "Cool! Tell me more!" stage. If there's no follow-up, I just want them to take away a simple street-level explanation that might stick with them till the next time they see/hear the word "Steem."

Mmmm I’ve tried the whole get paid for content thing but seeing that people are still very suspicious and the fact that Steem needs more investors I came up with this sarcastic towards Instagram one recently:

“Steem is similar to Instagram, you can buy likes and followers, but instead of paying it to a third party you can keep the money as your own invested stake.”

Interesting question. Shared with my followers.

I would say that Steem is a social ecosystem built with blockchain technology that provides you the control to your account without being a product. You are rewarded for your attention and engagement directly by your interactions and not by those imposed by third parties. It continues to expands as applications are developed to evolve the way you interact with the community.
