When you dig into Astrology more than just the little dimestore booklets or the daily horoscope in the paper, you start to hear Astrologers make a distinction between things like Sun Sign and Moon Sign ... and suddenly astrology to you gets a lot more complicated.
You probably know what your Sun Sign qualities say about you. From that you may figure Astrology is right-on ... or a whole bunch of hooey. And there are legitimate reasons to justify either conclusion.
One of those reasons could be the strength of your Moon sign -- or the Moon energy in your character ... which the mainstream doesn't talk about much at all.

Sun Sign astrology is popular because it's quick and easy ... and often pretty shallow. The Sun stays in a Zodiac sign about a month, and the general slice of calendar days it spends in each one is predictable.
The exact change-over dates can get a little dicey, but most people aren't affected by that. There are only 12 of them out of the 365 days in the year.
Cobble together a dozen or so basic personality traits, stick them in the right categories ... and where Sun signs are concerned, you're good to go. As I said, it all sounds pretty superficial -- and may leave you feeling there ought to be something more to all this Astrology stuff ... and wondering how people can dedicate entire careers to it.
The complexities surface ... for the first time ... when you hear about other planets and signs and houses and aspects -- after which you may just back away quietly.

The next "sign" you're apt to hear about is either the Moon sign or the Rising sign. (I can almost see the puzzled look on your face.) Each of these is different -- completely independent of your Sun sign ... and yet they can also be the same. It depends entirely on who you are!
It's revealed by when and where you're born -- which is why Astrologers want to know the place, month, day, year and time of your birth. (All this monkeying around with Daylight Savings Time sure messes us up sometimes, too. God, I hate DST -- for this and plenty of other reasons.)
If you go to all the trouble of getting your chart done, do have this information on hand -- as accurately as you can possibly get it. It's too much work for your Astrologer ... and way too expensive for you ... and there's too much riding on it (to be honest) for you to just guess.

So, for the rest of this article, let's talk about the difference between your Sun energy and your Moon energy -- because they are different and they are each very important. And together they begin to reveal why you may not relate to what Astrology says about your Sun Sign self ... and why not all people born under the same sign are alike.
Just as the Sun is the center of our solar system, the Sun in your horoscope defines the central essence of your personality. The Sun in your horoscope (just like the Sun in the sky at the moment you were born) will be in one of the twelve Zodiac signs.
Each of those signs represents a distinct increment of development in the creative cycle of life -- and there are definite character qualities associated with each.

and reflective.
The Sun is the only element in your horoscope which creates its own light -- and symbolically its light is your light. The quality of that light and the way it is expressed shines through the personality traits you use to be yourself and have an impact on the world.
The Moon is the other element in your horoscope, besides the Sun, that is not a planet. It reflects the light of the Sun -- which is how it appears to have its own light. Reflected sunlight is how the Moon shines.
The Moon in your horoscope reflects your Inner Self ... your emotional center and feelings -- as opposed to your Outer Self ... and ego interests ... which is the territory of Sun energy.

The Sun in your horoscope gives information about your ambitions, your willpower, your essential identity and your spiritual purpose. It describes not only vital pieces of who you are, but tells why you are here, what you're meant to accomplish while you are, and how you are equipped to go about doing that work. (But from that point on, the actual nature of that expression is entirely up to you.)
The Moon in your horoscope gives information about your emotional reactions and intuitive talents. It talks about how you express your feelings -- and what is likely to trigger them. It describes the personality you use when you're among people you feel "at home" with -- the intimate friends and loved ones in your life.
If you recognize that you are two different people when you're out in the world as opposed to when you're safe in the protection of "home" and your family circle, then you're seeing the difference between your Sun self and your Moon self.

and the "inner you."
The Moon also talks about your childhood, your family of origin -- as well as the family you establish as an adult. It talks about your history, your heritage, your ancestry, your "roots."
It gives information about your instincts and habits. It describes your natural way of dealing with women -- and your relationship with your mother. It essentially defines the whole private side of you which you won't necessarily share with the world -- but with only a few well-trusted people. Even then, it can describe a personality -- an inner self -- only you may ever know about or feel.
If you're aware of a part of you you never let anyone else see ... and feel no one really knows or understands the real you (because you keep it so hidden), -- or knows how you feel inside where you really live -- this is the wistful voice of your Moon energy asking for some time out in the sunshine.
If you've always known there was more to Astrology than Sun Sign material and the three line daily horoscope in the newspaper, climb aboard and follow this blog. You'll find a world of wisdom detailing how you were designed to work with life ... and why you are the way you are -- all in quick-to-read, easy-to-digest-and-remember, written-in-plain-English essays that offer plenty of food for thought.
Little by little, I'm doing a set of articles that talks about all the elements in your horoscope and what they have to say about you. If you "know something" about Astrology -- or know something about your chart placements, that will help you get more from this material.
If you don't ... well, this is one place you can learn. We all have to start somewhere ... because we aren't born knowing this stuff. Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.
One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.
Or, if you want to get serious and really talk about this, upvote this post and start a conversation in the comments section sometime in the next six days from the time of publication. We'll go from there depending on what you want to know.
Questions about any of this? -- Upvote this post and talk to me in comments. It's a terrific way to build value for yourself and the community ... and it will give me ideas of what to write about in future posts. Believe me there is lots to say about the way The Sun, The Moon -- and all the other elements in a horoscope, all the other components of Astrology -- work together to interpret you and your story -- and what it all means to the person you've become.
Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.
The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.
Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.
So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.
The photos here are part of that collection, with sincere thanks to the artists who saw these moments ... and with their cameras ... preserved them. All of us at Enchanted Spirit are profoundly grateful to them for their generosity and skill ... and for the added grace, depth and dimension their art brings to ours.

At the risk of getting lost in all these wonderful comments....
Confession: There is a part of me that's missing. I was adopted at birth. I can give you date place time precisely (With just a little work I could get within 20 yards or so with GPS coordinates).
Up until 3 years ago I didn't know who my birth mother was. 50 years of looking and a law change in the state of Washington and I know that. Just. I found everything I could on line and sent her a letter. No answer. So my genetic father is still every bit unknown. Merely 'unknown' on my new birth certificate.
I guess the point is, that I am interested in the 'whole' me.
So. Can I trust that you will get around to the 'rising sun sign'? I've never heard of it, but the rising sun is part of me and has been from the very start. I'm guessing it's been at least 20 years since I slept through sun rise. I greet the sun every day.
I'd guess you could say I am interested,
Nice post, upvoted and whatever else the rest said....
You really do make my day. And, ok. I'll get to the Rising Sign soon.
