The Acropolis towers majestically on a 156 m high limestone rock above the city. Through the monumental propylaeas one enters the area. On the right is the graceful Nike Temple, which was completely demolished in 2003 and rebuilt five years later; on the left is the Erechteion. In the middle from the rocks of the gods stands the Parthenon, the largest and most splendid building. The harmony of its proportions is astonishing. Today, the Acropolis is a gigantic open-air museum and a permanent construction site for archaeologists. But the scaffolding does not disturb. Especially at night, when it is illuminated, the Acropolis shines as a place of longing of the Greek culture.
