At least eight people were killed and 11 injured in Lower Manhattan, New York, in the US yesterday after a gunman in a truck ploughed through a busy bike path. Police say the injured had serious but non-life threatening injuries. The suspect, a 29-year-old man, has been arrested. A paintball gun and a pellet gun were recovered from the scene.
US President Donald Trump condemned the attack as an act of terrorism and said US must not allow ISIS to return after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was a cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians.
The New York Police Department said the suspect drove his truck south on the path striking multiple people. The department is closely monitoring the situation and working with federal, state and local partners in investigating this tragedy.
Federal authorities were treating the incident as a terrorist attack and were taking the lead in the investigation, a senior law enforcement official said. Two law enforcement officials said that after the attacker got out of the truck, he was heard yelling, Allahu Akbar, Arabic for God is great. (AIR)
