• Never take your personal safety for granted.

• Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.

• Look strong and competent! Remember, criminals look for low risk targets.

• If a car approaches you while you are walking down the street and you are harassed by the drivers, yell and run in the opposite direction.

• When walking, don't stop to talk with strangers. Remember, many street criminals will talk to their victims before they attack them.

• Never turn your back on a potential aggressor unless he is so far away he can't reach you before you get to safety.

• Do not walk down the street looking lost, fatigued, uncertain, or preoccupied. Assertive body language is essential. Keep your head up and walk with confidence and purpose, even if you are lost.

• Get into the habit of walking briskly.

Do not walk down the street looking lost, fatigued, uncertain, or preoccupied.

• Assume that violence can, and very well may, occur anywhere.

• Constantly scan your environment, thoroughly and quickly noting potential problems.

• When walking in the streets, avoid high-risk, high-crime areas of town.

• Don't display money or jewelry in public. You will only be asking for trouble.

• Wear clothes and shoes that facilitate quick and free movement. Try to wear sneakers or shoes with low heels. If you are wearing high heels and are being chased, kick them off and run barefoot.

• When entering a dark environment, allow a few seconds for your eyes to adjust before moving on.
