Part of Australia's eerie past....

Yesterday, the little lady and I went for a cruise south of Sydney to a few places, one called the Sutherland Shire, and the other, Woolongong.

The trip started with the 80 minute drive down to CoalCliff, where the famous Cliff bridge road is.

We were heading down to look for the abandoned Helensburgh Train Station, which was abandoned in 1915, buried under mud and silt for decades before being unearthed in 1995.

Helensburgh station was part of the original Sutherland to Woolongong line, starting about an hours drive south of Sydney.

There were two people who were found to have been killed in the tunnel before it was rendered obsolete with a new two-way rail which went around the town of Helensburgh. It's said to be haunted, and some people report seeing a fleeing coal miner running through the tunnel.

After the tunnel was disused as a rail tunnel, it was used as a mushroom farm in the 1950's and 1960's.

It was after it was abandoned that it was left in a state of disrepair, and after decades of rain without any maintenance, the entire tunnel and platform was buried.

After our little adventure through, we made our way to woolongong beach, went for a swim, and as is tradition, pulled the back seats down in the wagon and had a nap by the beach :)

You are so nice! Great post!

Thanks for that :) Australia does have a lot of stories about its past. I find then fascinating, mostly because my family first got here as both convicts and free settlers haha.
