What will we do when automation exceeds employment?

I keep coming back to this worry.

What does society do when the most common jobs have been automated away?

Fully automated burgers

Fully automated convenience store

Jobs already vanishing

  • Cashiers
  • Elementary school and kindergarten teachers
  • Administrative assistants
  • Food counter attendants, kitchen helpers and related support occupations
  • Administrative officers

I have crossed through any of the jobs that are being heavily automated in whole or in part.

Doesn't leave a lot of employment opportunities, does it?

I agree, I am even more concerned for my daughter. For the most part, we have more knowledge, know how than our parents, grand-parents and we are not more wealthy. Additionally, there is the more silent wave that is more on the white collar side: accounting, banking, insurances, law....
There is another problem, if there is a large part of the population not being paid for a job, the economy will become very quickly a big mess. Already a problem in many western countries where many persons with a Master do not find a job quickly, stay to parents' home, they generate less money on the long run.
Also people owning the machines will race relatively quickly for the lowest cost, there is just a short term profit. "Taxation" by any mean will not work.
Also automation is not as easy and accessible as people think.

The real problem is to enable people to create, to add value, to help to set-up businesses easily and very cheaply without large financial risks as we still have.

With the industrial revolution 4 these will become more common. Thank you for sharing @makerhacks

I think there will always be jobs for people who really want to work. There are always things like housekeeping, landscaping etc because there are always people who would rather have others do basic work for them.

There are already robot lawnmowers, gardners and vacuum cleaners, I can't see any unskilled work surviving

Humans always find a way to be wasteful which does help create unnecessary jobs.

In that era everyone must own some robots as their works making them livings for their families.
