After almost an entire year of speculation and theories, the follow up to Avengers: Infinity War finally has a title. But does the follow up satisfy audience expectations, or is it something we never saw coming?
Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War ahead!
Avengers: Infinity War itself was 10 years in the making, with multiple solo-hero movies culminating in a massive on-screen team up. The movie exceeded expectations, both critically and commercially, although with one element missing, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye.
The cliffhanger of Infinity War was shocking and upsetting. With the villain, Thanos finally achieving his endgame and obliterating half the population of the world. The teaser trailer for the follow-up now revealed to be titled Avengers: Endgame showcases the solemn and somber reflection on those events and the devastating aftermath. The trailer, seemingly, picks up directly after the events of Infinity War, with characters discussing the world after Thanos. And honestly speaking, it's incredibly difficult to keep it together when watching Chris Evans unabashedly crying, given that Captain America has always been the stoic and hopeful one of the bunch.
Most of the trailer plays out by giving us a situational report on where each of our beloved characters is post-Infinity War. But the best moment of the trailer is the reveal of Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, in a completely different avatar! Looking a lot more grim and darker than what we're used to seeing him as Hawkeye looks like he's been through hell.
In Avengers: Age Of Ultron, it was revealed that Hawkeye was a family man, complete with multiple kids and a wife played by Linda Cardellini. It was a sweet reveal that showcased a side of the character we never saw. It was also a way to give one of the two non-powered heroes on the Avengers team more backstory and significance in this magical, alien and God populated world. Infinity War also revealed that Hawkeye took a deal to be with his family after the events of Civil War.
So what would make Hawkeye not only return to the superhero life but doing it in a much darker way, complete with sword and new costume? Cap's voice over during the reveal of Renner's face in the teaser implies that Hawkeye's family might have been victims of Thanos' snap. If so, that would contextualize the pain in his expression and his actions in the teaser.
Hawkeye is the soul of the Avengers, and while overseer of the MCU, Kevin Feige has said he would play an important role in Infinity War, he was basically missing during the entire movie. Did Feige lie, or did he mean that that Hawkeye will be significant to the overall story told from Infinity War to Endgame?. This possibly tragic turn of even in Hawkeye’s life may see him as a completely different character, who may definitely take on a much more important role in the MCU if he did lose his family and has become a ruthless avenging crime fighter because of that pain.
We will have to wait for the movie to confirm Hawkeye's fate and that of out other beloved heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Avengers: Endgame is in theatres in April 2019.
