Yesterday one of the newbies I brought to Steemit called me on the phone to ask me what BANDWIDTH is on steemit and sincerely I didn't have the full answer so I had to do a little research.

I'll try as much as I can to make this explanation of bandwidth to be as simple as possible so anyone can understand and relate.

what is bandwidth?

Bandwidth is the limit of data you can send or receive in a network (in this case the network is steemit) . Here on steemit we all have bandwidth and it's possible for one to run out of bandwidth.

When you reach your bandwidth limit, you'll not be able to post, comment or upvote on steemit anymore.

this account has 48mb bandwidth

how to increase your bandwidth

1. Make Quality post regularly

Making original and quality post gives you reward and helps you get steem power which will increase your share in the block. Regular posting ensures you have a share in the block produced.

2. Only resteem when it's necessary

Resteeming post to your blog brings contents to your followers and if those contents are bad, it could drive away some of your followers which could lead to low upvotes on your own post.

Only resteem post that you feel is valuable to your followers. Resteeming other people's post stores their work on your blog which could eat up your bandwidth, so only resteem when needed.

3. Avoid editing your post and comments

Before posting what you've typed, take out time to read and proof read before posting. You can even ask a friend to help you read before posting so you can minimize editing.

4. Make comments when necessary

This particular point is for the newbies, you find them on almost every post begging for upvotes, follow and resteem. First of all you don't have enough bandwidth for all that, secondly such comments could attract flags.

Make sure you read a post before commenting, if you're too busy to read it, don't make comment. Avoid comments like upvoted, resteemed and followed" or "follow for follow".

5. Buy Steem Power | Power Up

Buying steem power or powering up does the following things for you on steemit

  • it increases your bandwidth.
  • it increases your influence in the community.
  • increases your reward when you like other people's post (curation rewards).
  • it's a great investment because one day, 1 steem will hit and exceed $100 and steem power can be converted to steem when you click power down.

When steem hits a hundred everyone will regret not buying more. That 3 cent vote will be worth 3 bucks

Exactly, but it will take a while for that to happen though

Jeez bro! You killed this article. It feels like something I could have written a long time ago. People underestimate the powers behind powering up, leaving valuable comments and networking on this platform. Cheers for bringing this up.

I think one shouldn't be restrictively counting their comments (just to save bandwidth) provided he/she is strategically leaving valuable comments after reading a post. In that case it will be a big plus because every comment counts as a post too.

#Hug-Challenge!

Yes everything dropped on steemit.com is valuable, including comments. I've seen someone who got $5 from commenting on a post, meanwhile his own post that day only made $1.2.

Yeah bro. It happens to me too often. Cheers to making good posts and comments on steemit!

BTW: do checkout the tag #Hug-Challenge. I created it out of the need to encourage people to be more participatory in this system and reward those doing it well. See yah!

OK I'll check it out

Awesome! Hmnnnn....powering up i think is the key. This simple tutorial is very helpful and timely, it's just answered one of the many questions on my mind. Thanks

Seems like a good explanation, but I'll have to read it again to take it all in.

Ok just do that and drop questions if you have any

okay..it will be very useful for newbies.....

Yes I thought so. That's why I wrote it

Great info on Steemit. Many people kind of use the site for communication without realizing how it works and operates. This was very helpful to me and I'm sure others as well!

Yeah true. Thanks for stopping by

Great explanation. I think bandwidth is one of those things that is a little more opaque. Partly this is because most experienced Steemians never run into the limitation, so they forget that it's a problem for new members that have not figured out good Steem practices yet.

Plus I'm all about encouraging people to buy more SP (:

This is true, I'll be getting some good steem power by January

Awesome @Samstickkz
I have been trying recently to buy SP, since you advise once that we should always buy SP.
Now i believe with this information, i can easily do that. Thanks so much
I have also learn a couple of things too.

Oh cool, buying steem is one of the best investments I know
