Bangladesh Railway is a major transport company of the government, owned by Malikana and the government. There are a total of 2,877.10 km route of Bangladesh Railway including 2,583 regular employees.As the railway is an important land transport system to connect one end of the country to the other end, overall improvement of the railways plays an important role in the economic development of the country.

Since June 2, 1982, the management and development of railway was entrusted to the Railway Board including a chairman and four members. Then, the expulsion of the Railway Board for the purpose of administrative and operational management came into effect on 3 June 1982 and the activities of the Railway Board were entrusted to the Railway Division of the Ministry of Communication and the Secretary of that department served as the Director General of Bangladesh Railway.For the same purpose, the administration of the two general administrators was divided into two regions east and west. Two General Managers of the two regions are responsible to the Director General of Bangladesh Railway. Later, on 12th August 1995, the daily activities of the railway were separated from the ministry and handed over to Railway Professionals in the hands of the Director General.A 9-member Bangladesh Railway Authority (BRA) was formed by the minister of the Ministry of Communications for the policy formulation. The Additional Director General and the Joint Director General have completed all administrative and policy assignments.

Assistant General Manager of two zones assisted by various specialized departments, who are responsible for managing, maintaining and financial management. Each zone is again divided into two main operations. These departments are managed under Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and assisted by divisional officials of various specialized departments like Establishment, Transport, Commercial, Financial, Mechanical, Way and Works, Signals and Telecommunications, Electrical, Medical, Security Force. There are also two Divisional Superintendent's Pahartali in the east and the workshop in the western part. In addition, there is a locomotive factory under the control of Parbhatipur Chief Executive for general overhaul of broad gauge and meter gauge locomotite. Under the 'Railway Training Academy (RTA)' under the Rector on the Bangladesh Railway, 'Planning Cell' under the Chief Planning Officer, for the coordination and consultation of 'Zone Zone' (Stores Department), two zone accounts and economic management programs under the Chief Controller There are accounts department under the Additional Director General (Finance). In order to inspect the various activities of Bangladesh Railway related to the management of trains and to ensure the safety of transport by rail, the government of Bangladesh first constitutes separate railway division and later railway ministry under the Ministry of Communications.
