Railey Beach - south Thailand

in #beach6 years ago (edited)

I never really focused much on this place and to be honest never visited it much despite the fact that it was just around the corner from my house. It is one of the most highly sought after destinations in the entire Kingdom and I can't really say why I didn't spend more time there - possibly because a wave-less beach, regardless of how lovely, doensn't really hold my interest for very long.

While appearing to be an island, Railey is actually attached to the mainland but is not accessible by road because of a rather large mountain limestone cliff that completely cuts it off from the rest of the chunk o' land. It is relatively easy to get there by boat from both Ao Nang and Krabitown. Because of the increased and I think excessive tariff that comes along with staying there, I actually recommend that people stay on the mainland and just visit here during the day. You'll save a lot of money by doing so.

This is the location of some of the world's best rock climbing and while I never really got into the sport I realize there are a lot of people that are. They have world-class instructors and guides over there and the beach areas feature climbs easy for beginners and damn-near-impossible climbs like the one featured in the picture.

Downside of the area: The food is very overpriced and it is understandable that this happens. The real estate is almost certainly ludicrously expensive and most of the food has to be brought in by small boats as there is no proper pier here.

If you are a true high-roller (and I am not) the place for celebrities and other such moguls of industry head to the ultra-luxurious Rayavadee resort where their cheapest room, during the least-expensive time of year, is around $500 a night. The 3 bedroom private villas with beachfront infinity-pool, as well as private chef, butler, and a speedboat with captain at your disposal starts at $3,500 per night. I will never have enough disposable income for this, but there are some people that do!

No one can own the beach though, and after many years of legal battles, Rayavadee was forced to open their beach to visitors and people staying at less exclusive resorts and bungalows on the island.

The above beach is unique in that the rock formation is right next to the beach and this keeps it quite cool all day long. Much of the water is covered by a natural "umbrella" made of rock above. If you think the beach looks crowded in the above picture, you should know that there are normally far more people there than this!

An overall great experience that I stopped taking advantage of because I lived in the area too long, it is easy to understand why people flock to this "island" in droves every year. If you make it all the way down here, it would be foolish to not at least visit. The boat ticket is a mere $3 after all.

I have been here and it is very beautiful! Like, really beautiful. It does get a little touristy…. as expected! Me and some friends rented a boat for the day and had a guy take us to loads of island and we had a bbq on a tiny island watching the sunset! We were the only ones there. The water is soooo warm around Railey beach area, almost hot!

That is normally the case for all of us that live in a tourist destination. When i lived in cape town I went up in the cable car twice and dodged the main tourist attractions. When you know what the local prices are you don't feel like being ripped off to visit something down the road.

This looks like a beautiful place to visit, but probably out of my price range! That little cove looks really refreshing. There are so many places that I am probably never going to get the chance to see in my lifetime. It is awesome that I can read about them here though. Thanks for sharing!

well i draw attention to the most expensive place just to point out the extravagances that exist there. There are plenty of places to stay for under $30 a night.

Wonderfull look in beach

Without a doubt, if I had $ 3,500 at my disposal, I would pay for a Private Villa. It is a really beautiful place!
