Beach Wednesday ~ White Rock Beach, An Incredible Feast For The Eyes

A short drive away from my house is White Rock Beach. It has a promenade along it, a street called Marine Drive with shops and restaurants to cruise past in your convertible, a pier to walk out on and fish for crabs, or dock your boat, and a train track which takes The Amtrak to the United States in the near distance. And lastly, a gigantic white rock! The glacial rock that migrated south weighs 486 tons. It was once kept white by seagull droppings, and was used as a beacon by sailors in the 1800's. It is now white washed with paint each month by the city to keep up the tradition.

It is 80 degrees and not a cloud in the sky today, but there is a nice breeze coming off the water at the beach. It is 5 pm in the evening and high tide now, but in the mornings the sand spans out for blocks away from the rocks.

Wednesday is the perfect day to go to the beach because it is not too busy with tourists. On weekends, it is difficult to find a parking spot in any of the parking lots or on the street, and there are line ups at the ice cream and fish and chip stands and trendy restaurants that line Marine Drive parallel to the beach.

The hill rising up from the beach is filled with strategically placed homes that take advantage of the unobstructed views of the water that extend for miles.

At least one trip to the beach a year is mandatory. Preferably one trip in the winter to see the grey lighting over the sea that joins the sky, and in the summer, to smell the salty sea air, the barnacles and the seaweed, and to get tired out by walking in the sun with the breeze. On Mother's Day, I was taken out for brunch to The Giraffe Restaurant which is an exclusive appointment only foodie eatery on the competitive street.
