Hi I am Dr. DS, AYURVEDA (Indian System of Medicine) practitioner from India.

Dark circles develop under eyes are commonly observed among both men and women. Dark circles are mostly attributed to lack of sleep and tiredness.

But dark circles need not occur only as a result of tiredness or stress. As you grow older, your skin loses its natural thickness and this can make the appearance of blood vessels underneath your skin more prominent.

As a result, this area can look darker than usual. Other situations, such as swelling near your eyes or fluid imbalance around the lower eyelids, can make your skin look darker.

HOW TO GET RID OF DARK CIRCLES UNDER EYES?

  1. Aloe Vera Gel
    Aloe Vera gel can prevent excessive pigmentation. It can also hydrate the skin in the area surrounding the dark circles and make it supple.
    • Apply aloe Vera gel on the dark circles and gently massage.
    • Leave it on overnight and rinse off in the morning.
    Follow this every night until the dark circles vanish.

  2. Cucumber
    Cucumber is a source of bioactive compounds and vitamins. This can help lighten the dark circles.
    • Cut a cucumber blend it to prepare a pulp.
    • Add aloe vera gel to the pulp and blend further until it is a fine paste.
    • Apply this paste on the dark circles and leave it on for 15 minutes.
    • Wash it off with water.
    You can apply this paste once every day.

  3. Tomato
    Tomatoes are rich in phytochemicals like lycopene that can help reverse the effects of pigmentation. This can help get rid of the dark circles that develop under the eyes.

  4. Potato
    Potato juice is a rich source of phytochemicals like azelaic acid. It can inhibit tyrosinase activity that is responsible for excessive pigmentation. Therefore, your dark circles will gradually fade away.
    • Extract the juice of grated potatoes and collect it in a bowl.
    • Apply the juice on the dark circles and leave it on to dry.
    • Rinse off with water.
    Apply this juice 2 times a week around the eyes.

  5. Saffron
    Bioactive compounds like carotenoids and riboflavin promote the anti-tyrosinase activity of saffron. These compounds potentially help prevent excessive pigmentation of the skin and can reduce the appearance of dark circles.
    • Soak a few strands of saffron in milk for about 2 hours.
    • Strain the milk and apply it on the skin surrounding your eyes.
    • You can wash it off in about 10 minutes.
    Use this remedy once daily.

  6. Honey
    Honey contains bioactive compounds like alpha-hydroxy acids that exhibit tyrosinase inhibition activity and help reduce excessive pigmentation. This can help in lightening dark circles.
    • Add a teaspoon of lemon juice to a tablespoon of honey.
    • Apply this mixture to the skin surrounding your eyes and leave it on for about 10-15 minutes.
    • Rinse thoroughly with water.
    Do this once a day until the dark circles fade away.
