If you live as a vegan, you know it can be difficult to find products that suit every part of your lifestyle. This is especially true for beauty products, as most contain animal by-products or hard-to-pronounce ingredients from unknown origins. Luckily, you can create your own vegan beauty products at home, using ordinary, cruelty-free items you may have in your own kitchen.
Shampoo
Shampoo can be hard one of the hardest vegan beauty products to come by. This is because most soap products are made from animal based ingredients. A vegan recipe for shampoo can easily be made at home. For the recipe, you will need to purchase some liquid castile soap, which can be found at natural food or health stores. The majority of castile soap is vegan because it is made from 100 percent plant ingredients, but look to be sure it is certified vegan.
All you need is
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup vegan liquid castile soap
- 1/2 teaspoon organic vegetable oil (sunflower works well).
Combine all three in a capped bottle and shake well. Use as you would any shampoo. You can add your favorite essential oil for fragrance and added benefits.
A very simple vegan shampoo can be made by combining 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of water. Mix the two until a paste forms. Massage into scalp and hair for a minute or two, then rinse well. This mixture will remove any product build-up, impurities, and leave hair very soft and shiny.
Conditioner
Making your own vegan hair conditioner at home is fairly simple, because many plant products are good for your hair and skin. An easy recipe for a tropical-type conditioner uses 1 avocado and 2 tablespoons organic coconut milk. Just peel the avocado, remove the pit, and mash with a fork in a medium bowl. Slowly add the coconut milk, and mix well until it is a smooth consistency. Apply to clean hair and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse well. Your hair will be smooth and silky.
Another effective vegan hair conditioner is apple cider vinegar. It has great detangling abilities and leaves hair soft and shiny. Just mix 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar and 1 1/2 cups cool water in a capped bottle. Pour the mixture over hair and work through ends, then rinse well. You will be amazed by the results.
Body Scrub
Body scrubs can leave your skin very soft and smooth, making them very popular. You can easily create a vegan body scrub at home using sugar and oil. Just combine equal parts of white or brown sugar and a plant-based oil such as coconut or olive. Mix into a paste and scrub into rough, dry areas of your body using circular motions. You can also add your favorite essential oil if you desire. Rinse well and follow with a good quality, vegan moisturizer. Your skin will have a beautiful glow.
Body Moisturizer
A good body moisturizer is a good thing to have, as dry skin is not pleasant. Finding one that is vegan is sometimes hard to do. You can simply use plain flaxseed oil for a vegan body moisturizer. Buy some that comes in a bottle and use as you would lotion. A little goes a long way so use caution.
You can also use pure aloe vera gel for a vegan moisturizer. All you need is an aloe vera plant. Just slice the tip off of a leaf and squeeze the gel onto your skin. If you don’t have an aloe plant, you can purchase pure aloe vera gel at health food stores.
It is also possible to create your own vegan body moisturizer. Just combine 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel, 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin, 3 drops jojoba oil, and 6 drops lavender essential oil. Place all ingredients in a glass jar and shake very well. Apply to skin as you would normal lotion, and shake before each use. This recipe will leave your skin very soft and well moisturized.
After creating these vegan beauty products at home, you should be pleasantly surprised. You may never have to search beauty shelves for vegan products again. You will also love the fact that all the recipes are fairly simple, and you will also save money. It is definitely worth your while to give them a try.
good work
