They say its a status symbol, showing the community what they are and what they had become. Yes you are right, to look good and appealing is important but there has to be some limit to it or it has to be nurtured unextravagantly. Yes, they can afford and thats the usual reason they gave but for me instead of wasting their riches why not share it to the needy ones.
