Confession: Before this article being studied...my wife and I were firm believer that "shaved-hair grow thicker".
Thanks for spending time reading this article, I promise, this article will take you NOT MORE than 3 minutes to read!
Why (still people believe so)
What do you normally do right after hair shaving (be it facial hair, legs, armpit etc)?
Me? I would touch the shaved area, and feel the "bristly hair" brushes along my sensitive skin, then try to "sense" if anything "left-out".
Wouldn't you do the same?
What Actually Happen When Shaving Hair
While the above may seem convincing, it is simply NOT true. When you shave, you’re cutting the hair straight on, making it blunt, therefore when you feel the stubble growing back you feel the thicker part of the shaft. Instead, you basically change the direction the hair grows, not the thickness.
This bristly shaved hair is part of a hair follicle's shaft is the first to emerge from shaved skin, however, this thick base naturally wears down into a thinner tip over time as the hair continues to grow.
Words From Professionals
"That's not been demonstrated to be so," Kurt Stenn, a biologist who's studied hair for more than 30 years, told Business Insider.
"Shaving your body hair doesn't make it grow darker or thicker," says Everyday Health expert dermatologist Jessica Wu, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California Medical School in Los Angeles. "Your hair is dead, and shaving it doesn't affect the living part of the hair, which is the follicle that sits deep under the skin.”
Alternative to Shaving -- Hair Waxing
Still not convincing? Me either...LOL...perhaps we should always have Plan-B -- Hair Waxing.
Everything come with "price", let's take a better look for hair waxing, see if this method really suits us?!
Pros
- It lasts a lot longer than shaving. Temporarily removes hair at the root for an average of three weeks of smooth skin, which can range from two to six weeks depending on your hair type and thickness.
- It saves you so much shower time. Shaving is a time-consuming task if compare to split second "tears of pain"....you know what I mean?
- It could potential prevent ingrown hairs.
- Waxing can get to all those “hard to reach areas”...
Cons
- It hurts. I am serious about this.
- It can be (relatively) costly (as compare to shaving, which could be carried out anytime, anywhere & whenever there is room for privacy).
- Waxing requires some regrowth in order to be effective, as the wax needs at least a quarter inch of stubble to adhere to.
By now, we would have much clearer picture about hair-shaving.
Shave, pluck, and wax all you want - It is basically a very distinguish preference of individual lifestyle.
Have fun, and be confident!
Cheers!
