We had the opportunity to pour some bokkereyder alongside Eric F. Walker at the voodoobrewery Good Vibes Festival. This was quite possibly one of the most well put together beer festivals I’ve ever been to. Amazing attention to detail, awesome brewers from across the stylistic spectrum, and a team of Voodoo workers and volunteers that went out of their way to make it a great experience all around. Many thanks to nycbeersociety for some of the photos! Tasting notes for those keeping score:
•
Pjassel 2017: 2 year old lambic with red vineyard peaches. First time trying this and it had an amazing bouquet of peach with a hint of citrus zip wuth a beautiful pink-red coloring. Taste is unlike any peach lambic I’ve ever tried. Slightly sweet with a mildly acidic touch and loads of brett that you could smell from a mile away.
•
Zomersaison 2017: this is an 80/20 Fantôme/Lamvic blend that spent time in barrels previously holding kriek and peach lambic. This one was very Fantôme heavy, and quite effervescent. The color was slightly pink, with a nice lactic bite and loads of hay/grass character.
•
Wijngaard Muscat/Riesling: This blend of 1, 2, and 3 year old lambic macerated with Riesling and Blue Muscat grapes also had extended maceration and barrel aging after maceration. Bottled December 2016 and still quite young, the vinous expressions in this one are off the charts really blurring the line between lambic and the natural wine world. Clear ruby in color with a nose full of fresh grapes and brettanomyces. Taste was very fruit forward with a range of dark fruits cut with a lemony-citrus note, deep cassis notes, loads of barrel, and a very prickly carbonation.
•
Wijngaard Mélange: this blend of 1, 2, and 3 year old lambic was macerated with pomace of Regent and Pinot Noir from 2015 and Dornfelder and Cabernet Cortis grapes from 2016 and bottled in December 2017. While not nearly as lively as the Riesling/Muscat blend, this one is just as expressive and trending even more toward the wine spectrum. Lots of oak barrel present on the nose as well as very subtle grape skin. Taste is laid back but very reminiscent of a nice Pinot Noir and blackberries with nice light touch.
