Beer Tasting - India Pale Ale (IPA)('Kabinet Single Hop Citra IPA' by Kabinet Brewery)

in #beer7 years ago

A bitter feeling after I missed NEO train today. Made only even more bitter by this IPA. The latter one in a good way.

No. No more about crypto today. I don’t want to think about it!

Work, drink, work. A day when you are happy there is drink in-between, even if only a taster size! Menu offered a Serbian brew and I went for it. Kabinet Brewery recently had a big offering at Bevog Beer Festival which I wrote extensively about, but we decided to pass it since it is somewhat available in Croatia. We are neighbours with Serbia, after all!

There is usually a mix of hops used in a brew but this one uses only one! Citra! What is it? Here is more info:

The Citra hop is a high alpha acid hop with a strong, yet smooth floral and citrus aroma and flavor. This is a fairly new hop variety which has recently caught on and become as popular as it in intense in both aroma and flavor. The citra hops has recently been used in single-hop beers with more frequency. This is due to it’s intense flavor profile that it balances with a smooth taste. The citra hop fits into the idea of American pale ales and IPAs, as it gives a strong hop kick while allowing a solid flavor profile to come out.

I also found Milk Stout by Pohjala on display! That one I reviewed recently - seriously tasty!

StyleIndia Pale Ale (IPA)
CountryNemenikuće, Sopot, Serbia
Alcohol5.4%
--------------
AppearanceDeep gold. Unusual color. Barman tells me the keg might be nearing the end and he even made it a freebie! Very hazy! Thick layer of pillowy head.
AromaFierce citric mix! Mostly orange. Also something sweet, peach or raspberry .
TasteVery different taste of what I'd expect.Grassy. Low bitter. Some lemon. Ehhh... Dry.
PalateMedium carbonation. A bit above watery. Leaves slightly metallic taste. Not overjoyed really. Had much better.
--------------
OverallMy first touch with Kabinet and I'm not impressed. I think there are much better IPAs available around at the moment but I'm looking forward to try something else from them soon.
Score (subjective)13/20

Price: 15 kuna (2.50$) for 0.15 ml. On tap at a pub. Splurge.

Looks like a good beer, that head looks almost creamy, so dense. Citra would be my favourite hop variety by a long way. Best Australian beer with Citra hops, Feral's Black IPA - Karma Citra - https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/9139/66323/

Single hop beers are a great way to pick up the flavor of a particular variety. Back when I was home brewing, I did a whole series of SMaSH (Single Malt Single Hop) beers to learn the flavors of particular ingredients. They were some of the best homebrews I ever made.

Our favorite was Castle Pale Ale malt from Belgium with American Mt. Hood hops. Mt. Hood is an old school hop that is derived from German Hallertau. It is floral, rather than the citrusy or resinous hops that are fashionable now.

I'm also a beer person. Almost every night I drink one bottle of local beer here in the Philippines. You're lucky to have tasted a great looking and I bet great tasting beer as well in India.

I'm hoping to travel the world someday and taste every beer in every country that I would visit. Just imagining it makes my mouth watery. Got to get another bottle. See ya!
