I was lucky to learn photography in a studio as a child, i had basic equipment two lights and a backdrop, none the less it was a studio.
However always shooting in a studio meant i always yearned to get out and shoot. Now this isn't to say i don't enjoy shooting in a studio i love the control a studio brings and for certain things it just makes sense photographing them in a studio.
Here is a day i broke free from the studio and took my lights outside into the wilderness, who am i kidding it's just a local park but its amazing what you can do with a clear patch of land and a few props.
This was the day i also got my hands on a pair of Profoto B1s and in all the excitement i forgot my modifiers at home. Luckily the Profoto's came with a shoot through umbrella which was a nightmare with the wind. Pro tip always carry duct tape.
I'm not usually a fan of using umbrellas mainly because the spread is so huge on them and i like working with little pockets of light rather than blasting light in every direction. In this case it worked really well the umbrella created a very soft light on the model and a bare bulb flash at the back separated the model from the background. I had the light at the back high up so it would bounce of the tops of all the props also otherwise they would of just all blended into into a huge mush.
Oh man thats one beautiful shot!! Totally know what you mean about umbrellas. They wouldn't be my most used modifier but they definitely have their uses alright.
Thank you so much man :)
Yeah I have a love hate relationship with umbrellas they either work really well at times for me or they just end up flooding light everywhere or maybe I’m just not utilising them to their fullest potential
