Yo,
Cool use of virtual grids! What do you think about distributing an opensim server VM to volunteers to build a P2P opensim grid? (Mandatory minimum PC specs would be required & continuous uptime would need prioritized, perhaps with fallback nodes to minimize land downtime) This idea was a brainstormed BOINC project:
Opensim/Hypergrid servers
http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Main_Page http://opensimulator.org/wiki/HypergridImagine we distributed Opensim docker containers and linked them together via Hypergrid. Users would need to prioritise up-time and perhaps there would need to be a minimum computer spec for this to be feasible.
Customers could rent land within the opensim servers & these fees could be distributed to those running the opensim servers.
Additionally, there is currently no in-game cryptocurrency, only centralised payment options. You could integrate cryptocurrency to increase usage of Gridcoin within the servers for in-game items or property.

Replace Gridcoin above w/ Steem; opensim/hypergrid do not have a backing blockchain yet - steem could be used and someone could implement a payment processor to replace the current centralized mechanisms in place.
Edit: Perhaps metaverse is attempting to become the next opensim crypto, but I honestly have no idea what their crypto is supposed to do.. http://ico-en.viewfin.com/index-en.html
The idea is interesting. But might have too be too complex and low demand currently. Virtual worlds code is only so good let alone trying to decentralize it. Will take a look. Maybe an idea less than a world but something more simplistic to start.
True that creating a P2P grid is a complex endeavor, but there's the real fact that hypergrid does not have a built in cryptocurrency - steem or graphene based blockchains could be used for trading ingame goods like linden dollars on second life (except decentralized).
Can you use coinpayments ingame?
I would very much love the idea of course.
Not integrated into the game. Maybe coded into objects in the game that would then point to the internet. I have not fully explored this option just yet. But hope to soon. :)
