Where is Leffe beer made?
Leffe beer is now part of a group called "AB InBev" and is still brewed in Belgium in Leuven (Artois brewery). As for the founders, the Premonstratensian canons, they are still present in the Abbey of Leffe, in six abbeys in Belgium and two in France.
Beer and the abbey
The name "Abbaye de Leffe" is often found, in good company, on the table of friends who taste... a beer of this name!
Since the oldest mention of the brewery in 1240, time passes, and history leaves its traces: after the turmoil of the French revolution, the brewery is no longer mentioned, nor the abbey.
In 1952, Father Abbot C. Nijs met a family of brewers, the Lootvoet family from Overijse. This was the beginning of a rich, courageous and fruitful collaboration that produced the "Leffe Beer", well known today.
The royalties of the brewery are part of the common property of the Rule, and the sharing, according to the needs, extends much further than the members of the community, and also touches a lot of needy people around the world.
