Emotion is a felling or affect that involves physiological arousal( a rapid heartbeat), behavioural expression( a smile or frown) and sometimes conscious experience( thinking about a romantic experience). It is the stirred- up of the state of being.
Emotion is closely connected to self-esteem. For example, negative emotions is associated with low self-esteem while positive emotion like joy is associated to high self-esteem. Emotion is like glue that connects life events.
The state of emotion is natural and individual whether old or young will experience one form of emotion or the other. It must be noted that a particular event can not produce two different emotional reactions at the same time e.g what will make you laugh can not make you cry at the same time.
Patterns Of Emotional Deviation
Love and Affection: At adolescence, the expression of love and affection is more paramount. Adolescence boys and girls often direct their love and affection to those they like and those they do not like unlike the childhood stage where love and affection is directed to concrete objects.
Temperament: Adolescents mostly in high schools are found to demostrate the highest degree of emotionality because the school as an agent of civilization provides an avenue for them to exhibit their moods and temperaments. They were also been described as unpredictable, intolerant, opinionated and often critical of adults and other situations he may find not acceptable to him. This often result into conflicts parents and other constituted authorities.
Joy and Pleasure: Sources of joy and happiness among adolescents include feelings of superiority, release of pent up energy and adjustment to the prevailing activities in the environment which often stem up from their freedom from parental control. This may lead them to over joyous and overexcited mood.
Aggression: An aggressive act is any form of behaviour performed to harm or injure a living being who is motivated to avoid such treatment. There are two types of aggression namely hostile and instrumental aggression. Hostile aggression is a situation where a person's utimate goal is to harm his victim. Aggressive act in which the perpetrator's aim is to gain access to objects, space or privileges is termed instrumental aggression.
Fear: The emotion of fear in adolecents may be towards objects, persons or performing an activity e.g recitation of poem or facing crowd, fear of snake or dark places.
Worry: This refers to imaginary fears; this may lead to emotions of anxiety . i.e anticipating about future. The state of worry experience by adolescents may be home related or school related. Home related fear may include; poor understading parents, inability to meet basic needs, poor or lack of parental love and affection. School related worries include fear of failure, anxiety of writing test and examination, poor study habit, differentiating sex role...
Anger: This involve reacting to stimulus that is not pleasant which results from reaction of the endocrine system and the disruption of coordinated cerebrum activity. The emotion of anger in adolescents can manifest as a form of reaction to;
- Verbal abuseby parents and other adults.
- Failure in class activities.
- Scolding by teachers and their school authorities.
- Unplesant remarks from adult and peers.
Individual are born with temperamental differences that are observable at birth in form of emotion. Thr state of emotion is natural and individual either old or young will experience one form of emotion or the other.
