The Ijebu people inhabit the South-central part of Yorubaland in western Nigeria. They are bounded in the North by Ibadan, in the East by the Ilaje and Ondo people and the west by Egbaland.

The southernmost borders of Ijebuland are defined by the lagoon waters of Ejinrin, Epe, I Ogun and Ikorodu Waterside.

Despite the political division which has placed some of these towns in Lagos State and the main part of Ijebuland in Ogun State, the Ijebu people have always regarded themselves as an entity.

Some migration legend linked the biblical Jebusites and Noah (hence “Omoluwabi - omo ti Noah bi - the children of Noah) to the Ijebu people. Other migration legends trace the Ijebu people to Mecca where Oduduwa, the legendary ancestor of the Yoruba was said to be the son of king Lamurudu. According to the legend, Oduduwa was expelled from Mecca where he was believed to have resorted to idolatry. This is an objectionable story since it implied that the Yorubas must have come into existence as group after some faithful Muslims expelled Oduduwa some 1500 years ago. But serious anthropologists and historians dismiss all these stories as far-fetched.

The migration theory that the Ijebu people came to their present territory from a region of Sudan is preferred by the traditional historians, indicating the ijebus had a parallel migration wave like other Yorubas who believed they came to their abode via Oduduwa.

Key highlights of the festival include horse displays by the various horse-riding families, dancing competitions among the various regbe-age grades, resplendent attires and deftly plaited hairdo of women. The festival is held opposite the Oba’s palace. It is a festival an Ijebu man home or abroad wouldn't want to miss any yea.

SUNGBO EREDO
Sungbo’s Eredo is war that was dedicated to Bilikisu Sungbo for her commendable contributions to the development of Ijebu-Ode. The sungbo Eredo is also believed to be the final resting place of the Queen of Sheba. The site was added to the tentative list of World Heritage Sites on 1st November, 1995.

**IKOKORE: THE IJEBU MOST SACRED **.

images.jpegimage source Ikokore is a meal readily available in Ijebu-Ode. They own this delicious cuisine. It is a must eat for visitors to the state. It is prepared with Water yam sprinkled with fresh fish, prawn, crab, pepper. Yummy! If you cannot get someone to prepare it for you, you can walk into these restaurants to order for #ikokore

Fun fact

Ijebu people are known to be party freaks. They love to rock the dance floor with glossy attire and flamboyant hairdos. It should come as a surprise that they host one of the biggest festivals in Nigeria.
