TOP 10 Questions

We were amazed at the interest to tonight’s SUN OVENS 101 13 Brilliant Ways to Use the Sun Workshop.

Many of you asked very similar questions so I thought I would address the top 10 topics on which we received questions.

What is the lowest ambient temperature (outside) that the SUN OVEN is effective at?
The outdoor temperature does not affect the performance of a SUN OVEN, so it can be used year round. If the sun is strong enough to cast a shadow, you can use it to cook regardless of the ambient temperature. If it is overcast to the point you cannot see a shadow, you will not be able to cook in a SUN OVEN.

The coldest temperature I have cooked at is ten-below zero, but SUN OVENS have been used in Antarctica at temperatures low as forty-below zero.

We have a lot of short rain showers and the sun comes back after a few minutes, will that damage the oven? If it starts raining midway through cooking in a SUN OVEN do you have to bring the food inside to finish cooking?
Rain will not damage a SUN OVEN, and the cooking chamber has an airtight seal, so food will not get wet. If the sun plays hide and seek while you are cooking, you can still cook if you have the sun at least half of the time (31+ minutes per hour).

In both cases, it will take longer to cook. If the temperature in the chamber of the oven drops below 180F (83C) the oven it will no longer be cooking and you should finish cooking with another method.

Can you cook venison in a SUN OVEN?
You can cook venison in a SUN OVEN and it will be moister than other cooking methods. You might find these links helpful:

Can I pay for a SUN OVEN in monthly installments?
Yes, you can call us during business hours to set up a payment plan at 800-408-7919. Mon-Thurs 9am - 5pm and Friday 9am - 3:30pm Central Time.

If you use Cast Iron, does it take longer to cook? Or is it recommended to use lighter cookware?
You can use any type of pot or pan that is oven safe in a SUN OVEN. However, due to the even heat in the SUN OVENS cooking chamber food will take longer to cook in a thicker pot. The pots we sell are enamelware which is thin and dark so things can cook or bake as quickly as possible. Stoneware and glassware work very well. Stoneware is ideal for slow cooking and will take about 30% longer and glassware will take about 15% longer than the enamelware.

Cast Iron Dutch Ovens work very well for slow cooking in a SUN OVEN. With the even heat in the SUN OVEN, it takes 90 minutes longer for a SUN OVEN to come up to temperature with a cast iron pot as compared to the enamelware pots. But once the cast iron heats up the retained it will allow food to finish cooking even if it gets cloudy.

How do you make sure bugs or animals do not get to your food?
The glass door gets hot enough that any animal that is out during daylight hours will sense the heat and stay away from the oven. An animal would need to sit on the glass door to open the latches and get to the food.

The temperature in the SUN OVEN chamber and the flow of warm air escaping from the SUN OVEN while dehydrating makes it unappealing to bugs. Most dehydration is done at a temperature of 110 to 155 degrees F, and bugs cannot survive at temperatures above 130 degrees F.

We have a large family. How many people can you cook for in a SUN OVEN?
Each SUN OVEN can cook for an American family of 6 people.

How do you regulate the temperature?
To get the oven hotter you realign it more often to follow the sun. To reduce the temperature, you realign it less frequently. Nothing burns and nothing dries out, so you do not have to worry about exact temperatures when cooking in a SUN OVEN. As an example, bread can be baked at a lower temperature for a longer time without drying out.

How do you clean it?
The reflectors can be cleaned with any type of glass cleaner like Windex or vinegar. Everything you cook in a SUN OVEN (except baked goods) is cooked in a covered pot or baking bag, so there is not any splattering like in a gas or electric oven. The only time you need to be concerned about cleaning the interior cooking chamber is if you spill food. The interior can be cleaned with dishwashing soap or sprayed out with a garden hose.

Can you cook a pizza in a SUN OVEN?
Yes, if you preheat a 12-inch pizza stone while you preheat the SUN OVEN you will get a fine crispy crust.
