My Biography for Homesteader's Co-op

in #bio6 years ago

@sagescrub asked me to do a little short bio for the Homesteader's Co-op community page and, just as I made the logo a bit too detailed, I also ended up making my bio a bit too long..!
So I re-wrote it, but then I thought that I might as well use what I wrote for something, so instead of just throwing it away, I'll let you know a little bit more about me here..!

Bonus Biography about me...!

I have always had a great love of nature!

My father is a biologist and as a child he often took me to the forest and taught me about the plants, trees and animals. But I grew up in the city (Copenhagen) and in some ways I have always felt a disconnection to something vital. To nature both without and within.

I have never felt attracted to modern life and 8 hour workdays, and growing up I often found myself isolated in my own world of drawings!

I have always been drawing and have used art to create my own universe. As a teenager I started playing guitar and in my early twenties I left Denmark with my thumb, my guitar and my drawing book, and ended up travelling the world the next 10 years (with shorter or longer "home"-periods), making money playing music and drawing and hitchhiking.

While traveling I learned a lot more about wild edible plants and discovered breathtaking landscapes which all awoke a new love of nature in me.

I became a mother in 2014 and traveled and lived in a campervan, but soon started missing a deeper connection to places and people and to plant and follow my own seeds.
I feel that I have to heal the disconnection I felt growing up, by moving deep into nature and connect with the forest, while also connecting with people on more than a surface-level.

I therefore bought a big piece of land in a forest together with a couple of other people in December 2018 and here I wish to grow my roots and start an eco-village, because I believe in the power of community and connection!

That was the long short story. I boiled it down to this in the end:

I am a mother, a traveller and an artist who is in the process of creating a new home in a forest on an island in Denmark!
I have been drawing since I was little and always used art to create my own universes. As a teenager I started playing music and as an adult I started to recognise my love for nature and gardening. With these three cornerstones I am now creating a life and a home around myself and my son, and at the same time creating a bigger eco village to include community and cooperation!
I believe that we can create a beautiful life if we cooperate with nature and each other.

Sort:

Sounds like you are living the good life! I was an ecologist, and once owned a beautiful block of forested land that I wanted to turn into a commune. Unfortunately it never happened, but perhaps one day the opportunity might present itself again.

Very interesting life you have led thus far. I think it will be cool to see some blogging about this eco-village you have plans for. It would be awesome to see it progress. I have a friend that is sort of living within one now. They had a hard time finding the property, now they are finding that it takes more money than originally thought to support it. I always enjoy his rants and how he works things out in his mind. Best wishes to you with your endeavors :-)

Thank you and yes, I will share a lot more about the progress of the eco-village!
I know, we are quite optimistic in this endeavour, we hardly have any money so let's see what we can build, but we are hoping to use as much recycled and free materials and workforce as possible! It might take a bit longer than first thought, but we will create something!

Nice to read something about you! Thats just awesome to think of making a home on an island.. Is it already populated?!

haha, yes, it's not really that wild or rural at all. We are just about 4 km to a town, but it's very hard to find wilderness in Denmark..! Bornholm is not that small an island, it has a couple of towns and lots of visitors in summer. Almost too crowded actually :P

Hahaha, more people, more problems :)

Cool that you found a nice base to build, congrats!

Modern life is extremely sub-optimal if you ask me, and best avoided!

Your ecovillage project looks great! I'll look forward to hearing how it evolves!

thank you! I'll do my best to update on the progress :)

That's awesome. Sometimes I get fed up of this frugal lifestyle and think about moving to such a village, as well! 😉

Great presentation!

well, you are always welcome if you feel like escaping ;)
Thank you!

I'm a forest guy too. That's awesome that you got to buy a piece, what an opportunity! How big is the property you'll be managing? Is your ancestry native to Western Europe? I didn't realize how far south Denmark is (world geography was never my forte.

yes I am Danish all the way down to the vikings as far as I know.... ;)
The property is 12 hectares, where 8 of them is forest... :)

It's great to discover another forest dweller. I live in a very rural Cherokee reservation that is heavily forested with nice rough topography and a spring in the bottom of the hollow behind the house. We're surrounded by 150 acres of tribe owned reserve and another 40 acres owned by non-residents which is largely inaccessible, leaving only one side with an inhabitant living about 1/4 mile away. A beautiful small lake that's relatively unknown is a short walk away, crossing only 1/4 mile of private property which is uninhabited. People out here walk across each others land frequently.

Had to cut down a small tree to park my truck on the property for the first time. The path through to the house is twisty because that's where the fewest big trees were. Buried the power line in to avoid cutting any more.

Love living in the forest. It's so peaceful and fresh with a view of the sky at night that's amazing. I don't leave for weeks at a time when I can. Could shut the gate and not leave for years if it came to that.

let me know if you would like me to share what I would have done different/better if building my place in the forest again, knowing what I know now.

Congratulations on your return to nature.

Wow, that sounds amazing! And sounds like your place is much wilder than ours!
Denmark is really super settled, due to pretty much all the land being suitable for agriculture, so the only forests still standing are protected. 8 hectare of the forest on our property are protected forest, which have to remain forest. But just on the other side are fields and farm houses.
Sure I'd love to hear more about your experience! I'm pretty green in this field and have to learn pretty much everything from scratch!

If you get on https://discordapp.com using your steemit/Dtube name I can invite you to direct message about forest dwelling stuff. Let me know if you have a different discord name

You should be able to find me as frejafri like my steemit name 🙂

Its a beautiful story! How special that your father was a biologist and showed you a connection with nature. Its beautiful that you have so much love for nature that you are able to share with your child :) Thanks for sharing!

thank you! And for the opportunity to reflect a bit ;)

You have a wonderful life, just a dream!

That’s some rediculously big nasturtiums 💗
