WHAT IS HORMONE?
Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body naturally. Once dispensed, the hormone will be channeled by virgin tissue to various tissues and cause certain effects in accordance with their respective functions.
Examples of hormonal effects on the human body:
- Physical changes which are characterized by hair growth in certain areas and distinctive body shapes in men and women (enlarged breasts, feminine body curves in women and masculine body shape in men).
- Psychological changes:
Feminine and masculine behavior, sensitivity, and mood. - Reproductive System Changes: Maturation of reproductive organs, production of sexual organs (estrogen by ovaries and testosterone by testes).
Behind its amazing function, hormones sometimes become the culprit of various problems. For example irregular menstrual cycles or acne that grows blindly in the face. Hormones are also sometimes make us happy or even sad without cause. Everyone must have experienced this, especially during puberty. Certainly, each hormone has a very specific function in each of its target cells. Not surprisingly, one kind of hormone can have different actions according to the cells that receive it when drained by blood. Basically hormones can be divided according to their different composition of the content as follows:
- Hormones containing amino acids (epinephrine, norepinephrine, thyroxine and triodtironin).
- Hormones containing lipids (testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, aldosterone, and cortisol).
- Hormones that contain protein (insulin, prolactin, vasopressin, oxytocin, growth hormone, FSH, LH, TSH).
These hormones can be made synthetically.
