In a previous post I mentioned a new friend who started visiting me, Blue, the Great Blue Heron.
Blue, a juvenile, visits me everyday! I am trying to establish a healthy pattern with him so he does not over rely upon me feeding him.
I feed him small amounts of fresh shrimp and we hang out and share our day together. I have a distinct routine and whistle I use with him when he feeds.
Sadly, I noticed since the day I met him that he has some fishing gear stuck in him. Although he will come within touching distance of me, I know I will never be able to take this off of him, which is a shame.
Thankfully he is able to manage well in spite of this hazard. It really makes me sad when I see the negative impact of human intervention on nature in this way.
Blue is a sweet bird and a lovely companion. His visits are precious to my daughter and I.
All pictures were taken by @rawruss with a Nikon D3400 w/ 70-300mm lens, except for the selfie, which was via a Galaxy S9+, in August 2018 in North Florida.
Great shots of this beautiful heron. It's interesting that they bond and interact with humans.
There have been times when I walk outside and see him across the pond. I call out to him and whistle and he will immediately fly to me. It's very cute. We sit on the lawn together and relax too. He'll set a distance he is comfortable with, which is usually about 6 to 8 feet away from me. He will even preen next to me too. My Conures aren't too happy about all of this though. Sometimes they yell at me from inside the house when they see me with Blue.
