Winter Birding - Outer Banks, North Carolina

in #birding7 years ago

This winter is continuing to provide some rarities. While I missed the recent Snowy Owl (Wwwwhhhhaattt!!!) sighting on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Dare County to be exact, I've been excited to see the following:

WHAT BIRDS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY, POST REPLIES BELOW.

An American Pipit, which breeds in the Far North, but is found throughout the US during the Winter months, usually feeding in grassy areas.

A Common Goldeneye (Female) which really ain't so common. We only get one or two a year on the Outer Banks, and they are usually a little difficult to find on the large impoundments on the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.

A Red-Throated Loon seen close to shore in the area of Southern Shores, Dare County, NC. They really aren't that rare, but the unusual thing here was the distance it was to shore. Only about 30 yards from the beach, I was able to capture a decent photo with my 300 mm lens.
