The American magazine Wired thinks he has unmasked who is behind the pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of the bitcoin. It would be an Australian computer genius, Craig Wright, 44, who would own one of the most powerful computers in the world, as well as a small fortune ... in bitcoins.
will the mystery of the creation of the bitcoin soon be cleared up? At the end of a long investigation, the American magazine Wired would have found the inventor of the virtual currency to the reputation sulphurous. Behind Satoshi Nakamoto lies a brilliant 44-year-old Australian computer scientist, Craig S. Wright, with diplomas (two Masters degrees in law and statistics and two doctorates) and computer security certification.
After the false scoop of Newsweek a few months ago, Wired caught tweezers, declaring that "either Wright invented the Bitcoin, or it is a lie carefully elaborated to make us believe."
The survey relies, in particular, on posts published on a blog and several emails provided by a "source close to Wright". Thus, three months before the creation of the bitcoin, the Australian wrote on "the cryptomonnaies" and proposed to contact him via an encryption key identified to Satoshi Nakamoto. In January 2009, on his blog, Craig Wright announces the launch of the bitcoin, in a message (below in picture), which will be deleted thereafter. The computer specialist also used the email address used by Nakamoto to communicate for several years.
A fortune now estimated at half a billion dollars
Among the tangible proofs, Craig Wright would have spent large sums in bitcoins. In 2013, he launched Hotwire, a sort of bitcoins bank, funded only in bitcoins, for $ 23 million, or 1.5% of the bitcoins circulating in the world at the time. He also founded with a partner, David Kleiman, who died since, a fund called "Tulip Trust" on which were deposited the first bitcoins "mined" (1.1 million precisely), worth half a billion of dollars. A figure that corresponds to the gigantic portfolio visible to all, which was attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto. At the peak of its value in 2014, its fortune exceeded one billion dollars.
The computer scientist also invested nearly a million dollars to equip himself with two "supercomputers", one of which would be in the top 500 of the most powerful machines on the planet. According to Wired, it would also have paid dearly for bringing fiber to one of its farms in eastern Australia. This state-of-the-art technology would have allowed it to "undermine" the encryption process through which virtual currency is created.
- Search of the Australian police
It took only a few hours after Wired pulled for the Australian police to search Craig Wright's home. Officially, the intervention is not related to the bitcoin but a simple tax mix ...
Governed by no central bank or government, virtual currency is involved in many criminal cases. But the stakes are even more important because the "blockchain" technology behind the bitcoin could revolutionize transactions and exchanges of information, by eliminating intermediaries. About 20 banks, including Société Générale, are very interested. The future will tell if Craig Wright is a genius or a bandit.
