A Delhi woman has lost around Rs 41 lakh (62976.00 Dollar) after her bitcoin wallet was allegedly hacked by unidentified men.
the woman first lost around Rs 6.5 lakh (App. 10,000 Dollar) worth of bitcoins to hackers who got access to her account. The rest of the money she lost to the cheats who assured to help her retrieve her wallet.
The woman said to the police that she had made an investment and bought 0.4 bitcoin in February 2017. She did it via a firm which assured her 12 percent monthly returns on her investment. Initially, until August, she kept getting the assured returns in her bank account.
Meanwhile, in May, she also invested more amount in the cryptocurrency as her mutual fund investment matured. “I invested all my savings in the company along with my friends and family members. The company owners assured me returns of 12 percent monthly on my investment,” the victim said in the report.
However, after August, the firm started handing out returns in its own cryptocurrency, a move which was protested by her and other investors. Sniffing a fraud, the woman asked the firm to return the invested money.
The company, in October 2017, asked her to share the email ID and password registered with the company’s website for the process of refund to begin. The woman could not sense that this could be a trap and complied with the request.
“On November 8, 2017, my blockchain wallet was hacked, which had 6.5 Bitcoins. The hackers also deleted all the data on my email ID,” the woman said.
After a few days, she contacted an acquaintance who claimed to help in retrieving the lost money by ‘earning’ Bitcoins through binary trading. The woman paid a total of Rs 35 lakh.
“After getting the amount, he started complaining that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer and cannot meet anyone. Later, he stopped responding to our calls and other communications,” the woman was quoted in the report
