Hey there! as you may know, Segwit activation is a big step for Bitcoin since it'll help greatly in the scalability issues of the first cryptocurrency in the world. Its adoption will allow for even better protocols to further increase bitcoin scalability. After months of discussion over Segwit, the train is finally in motion, and a new step has been reached today.
About two hours ago, the new 2016-block period for Segwit (BIP-141) lock-in has begun. Bitcoin blocks having 10 min intervals, this period will last for 2 weeks. A minimum of 1916 (95%) Segwit-signalling blocks will be required for Segwit to lock-in. What makes it different from the previous periods is that BIP-91 will be active during the whole duration of the period. Thanks to the adoption of BIP-91, blocks not signaling Segwit are being rejected, and currently all mining pools are signaling Segwit readiness. If BIP-141 support is maintained, Segwit lock-in can be expected in about 13 days!
Assuming Segwit does lock in, it will then activate after the next difficulty period, i.e. 4 weeks from now, on August 24th. Get ready for those fast and cheap transactions!
