When Bitcoin started it was made so any average person could mine it on their home computer. Currently difficulty is too high but still, there are many coins which can be only mined on CPU/GPU or that are at least still worth it.
Let's have a look at what's the best now.
CoinWarz
So ZEC and its forks ZCL ZEN are the best. Ethereum on second place. Worth noting that ETH soon will go into PoS mode so mining this might be historical soon.
Minergate
Minergate

These guys in their auto app choose XMR, BTN, ETH etc. for now for CPU. Whats cool in latest app version is that you can withdrawal coins mined right from the app, you don't need to get on the website at all (you need to register HERE first).

NiceHash

Their app auto chooses what to mine and currently its XMR algorithm.
What To Mine

Interestingly it says SUMO is the top coin for payment, then we have XMR and then NiceHash.. Possibly people mine SUMO today for payments on those.
Summary
If you are very lazy go for MinerGate since they are on iMAC, Linux and Windows. If you are little less lazy and want better profits to mine directly ZEC or use NiceHash but windows only or you have to point your miners to them directly.
in CPU XMR Monero (and ETH Ethereum) win(s), no doubt in this.
Additional thoughts: (Important!)
The way bitcoin's exchange rates are stretching like a rubber, it is bound to snap! After this happens, it is very likely people will turn to look at other cheap, easy to obtain and manage cryptocurrencies that are likely to increase in price. Some currencies that I feel have a good scope and potential for growth are Monero (XMR) and Ethereum (ETH)

ICO crazy is here but let's see how they trade now so you can expect next ones and current returns if you invested.
Best ROI vs BTC Invested
Keep in mind those you would have to hold few years to have this ROI now. Not that easy. IOTA and 0x I believe are still undervalued.
Best ROI vs ETH
CVC and BAT should raise way more IMHO.
Tezos aka XTZ is actually at 400 million because they still hold BTC and BCH from the ICO. They are only traded on BitMEX futures.
