I don't believe this could even be called ransomware. The files are not stolen, they are scrambled and encrypted. This could go on for years since the US is one of the only countries that make IT security a priority and there is still the possibility of another mutation. Their point wasn't to get bitcoin, it was to exploit a vulnerability. One which blockchain could ultimately remedy for most systems. Unfortunately, updating security measures is not going to do the trick. The real shame here is the NSA should have told Microsoft about the vulnerability instead of keeping it in their arsenal for possible use at a later date. Followed and Esteemed :-)
