For as long as you, me and most readers can probably remember, we have only ever had one system of money.
Sure, they had different names, and the pictures on the paperbills or coins were different, but every FIAT currency in the world essentially works in the same way... not very well, and gradually worse over time...
I don't think I need to go into much detail about why this is the case, and that would make the post waay to long.
But if you're not aware of how a centralized, FIAT monetary system works - or rather doesn't - that is something you should definitely look in to. In the meantime, this video might provide a simplified explanation:
"Mummy, How Does Money Work ?" - Andreas Antonopoulos
As the video above implies - money is a very hard concept to understand, at its core - at least to the layman who uses it the most from day to day.
Personally, I think that most of the people in "professional finance" don't even understand what money is, at its very deepest, fundamental level - even though they might be able to predict manipulated and self-fulfilling market cycles with varying degrees of accuracy.
I have spent hours and days trying to understand FIAT money systems, and on the surface it often makes sense...
Until you start digging deeper... and then deeper...
And finally end up, where the most basic instincts of human nature are exposed...
Greed; corruption; the want of ultimate power over others, abstract and social capital and shiny things!
Everything you could ever dream of - and then accumulate as much of as possible!
And once you've goen that deep - it's impossible for most rational thinking human beings, to overlook the fact, that these instincts, are what drive the people, that control the system we live in and under - and that this is not in our best interest...
At all!!!
Brevity is the soul of wit - and longevity the soul of the contemplative!

Fiat is dead, btc brings little hope to regular people.
A little hope is all we need, as long as enough people are hoping! :)
I think it'll be a while before we bury the last FIAT note, but I'll be right there to **** on it's grave!!! :D
FIAT money is fugitive, commodity money is question mark... But cryptos are the future of the world finance...
We can only hope... either that, or something even better :)

I agree that the real meaning of money is very abstract to some people (at least, in the general population), but I wonder if it's not at least partly wanted from governments to do so. The least people question it, the more power they get.
I like Andreas Antonopoulous' coining money as an "abstraction of value", which is really what FIAT money is, when you think about it... From pokemon cards, to marbles, and bubblegum stickers - we we're all inventing our own money before we even knew what we were doing - and someone decided to scale that concept and force us all to adapt it... IMO
