During the last couple of months, numerous companies have shown support for bitcoin by offering the digital currency a way of paying for their products and services. However, recent reports indicate that Microsoft has reconsidered this strategy. In fact, Microsoft has chosen to silently stop supporting bitcoin in the Windows 10 store, where it was used by customers from all around the world for quite a while, considering the fact that the company chose to adopt the currency back in 2014.No official statement has been released by Microsoft so far, yet they have made an update to the Windows 10 Store FAQ, where they reveal that bitcoin is no longer accepted a s a method of payment, when it comes down to buying content from the Windows 10 mobile and PC stores.According to the firm, existing balance that you may be holding in bitcoin can still be used to carry out transactions for a while, however, no new deposits can be made via the currency. The official statement says: “Microsoft Store doesn’t accept Bitcoin. You can no longer redeem Bitcoin into your Microsoft account. Existing balances in your account will still be available for purchases from Microsoft Store, but can’t be refunded”.There are quite a number of rumours circulating around the web, debating what the reason behind Microsoft’s decision is. Usually, companies decide to drop bitcoin temporarily when there are high price fluctuations, or when the bitcoin community is affected by an overly-mediatized event. Surprisingly, none is the case right now, and future bitcoin price fluctuation point towards a higher value, therefore there’s no use to stop accepting the payment method now. There are also reports which point that Microsoft has ended their partnership with the bitcoin wallet they were collaborating with. While there’s no official report on this, it is a possibility that should not be discredited. Regardless of this, when bitcoin was introduced back in 2014, Microsoft made a press statement, saying that bitcoin is not yet mainstream, and that they expect the currency’s growth to continue. What happened now?Based on everything that has been outlined so far, what do you personally think about Microsoft’s decision to pull the plug on supporting bitcoin transactions?
