Showtime Websites Caught Secretly Using Customer CPUs to Mine Cryptocurrencies. Where Is My Check???

I found this techspot article interesting because the author noted that CBS-owned cable network "Showtime" neither confirmed nor denied that the hidden (now discovered) cryptocurrency mining code was a result of a hacker or their own doing.

No one reads the Terms of Service agreements that users must sign in order to register as a member.

If companies start to feel that they want to make some side dough and legitimize it by putting it in their Terms of Service, then I wonder if I have to start reading "the fine print?"

I wouldn't mind if the default is "opt-out" but all too often companies use the "opt-in" as a default. I also probably wouldn't mind if a company were to share/distribute mining profits (unlikely).

The silver lining here could be that the cryptocurrency market will grow if more companies can figure out ways to leverage their customer (overtly) to mine and (hopefully) be willing to share the profits.

What are your thoughts on the subject?

I think the service most people are implementing into their website comes from coin-hive.

It is an XMR miner, that uses a JS script to mine at about 70% power. Not too shabby for a browser based technology.

(Disclaimer: I do use the miner publicly on my own website, but have no affiliation with coin-hive.)

Basically, don't waste your time. The results aren't mind blowing, and are going to irk a lot of customers.

Currently in bitcoin terms, I think you get about 400 satoshis worth of XMR per million hashes solved? And the average hashrate I'm seeing is less than 10/ second.

So in exchange for more than 100,000 seconds of the customers time and effort, (Which would be over 24 hours? I believe?) you'd get 400 satoshis.

I am keeping mine, because it is a public profit share "mining" system that actually makes sense on my micro earnings site, but for most people. C'mon. You can do better than that. Just add a donate button, for pete's sake.

Just my 2 cents on the whole thing. I love the technology. I'm assuming they compiled a C++ miner using ASM.js, and whatnot?
So cool tech, gimmicky results, that'll make your customers mad, and won't get you any closer to a payout.

Thanks for the article. Upvoted, and will follow, since you talked about something cool, and techy. :)

Wow - thanks for the info and your comments. Good point about crappy results even if companies do decide to share.

There is also a very new and common sort of malware going around that will just take some resources of your computer to mine crypto's on your bill.
It's a brave new world...

Agree. It's foolish to blindly believe that we are immune to malware. Everyone must be vigilant with checking.

Thanks for the comment.

Hi Crypto Tickets

Thanks for reaching out. I have a few questions:

Is a stake worth a certain amount of tokens?
Can I do a short interview with someone at crypto tickets that is willing to talk about the project?
If I join the bounty program, I would follow you on steemit and repost when/where I see fit?

I think the captcha is nice for owner and users of a site , the owner earns money because there are 1024hashes to be mined to complete the captcha , and the user has no work with putting in characters or numbers that are hard to read , or click on the recaptcha pictures.

Have fun stealing my chromebooks hash rate of 1H/s
