Hardware Wallet Reviews: Trezor, Ledger, & KeepKey

State of the market:

For new readers:

Cryptogram is my personal journal of thoughts about cryptocurrencies and related topics. See the bottom of the post for more information.

Getting into it...

Hardware Wallets.

SO I now personally own A ledger Blue, A ledger Nano S, a Trezor, and a keep key. I am just going to put a bullet list of my thoughts and concerns for each model.

Ledger Blue:

  • Beautiful lcd screen display, really makes it a pleasure to use, however the touch sensitivity is not on the same level as say an iphone or galaxy making it a little different than your typical touch screen experience.
  • Both ledgers funtion with the most coins its seems. I have BTC (Legacy and segwit addresses,) BCH, ETH, LTC, DASH, ZEC, XRP... overall they seem to be really on top of getting the most coins. Furthermore, the functionality with www.myetherwallet.com makes this very easy to manage tokens.
  • the actual display doesn't really show your coins. I was hoping it would but no such luck. You have to connect to the application to actually see your coins. The hardware just signs transactions.
  • the ledgers seem to have FIDO U2F capability built in. This is really cool. Makes them even more secure.
  • both ledgers didnt seem to be as easy flowing to use on my mac. You have to ensure you get the plug, open, unlock sequence right for the wallet to register on the app. I assume this wil be fixed with newer software versions.

Ledger Nano S:

  • All the same functionality of the ledger blue but without the screen. Also quite a bit smaller making it easier to use. (The blue is roughly 2.5x the size of the nano.
  • one button easy access, nice clear blue letter screen. good wallet.
  • both ledgers didnt seem to be as easy flowing to use on my mac. You have to ensure you get the plug, open, unlock sequence right for the wallet to register on the app. I assume this wil be fixed with newer software versions.

Trezor:

  • great functionality. I really appreciate the way the pincode is set up for use of the device. basically makes key loggers a problem of the past.
  • easy to use and no plug/play issues like I had on the ledger. Very smooth interaction with the software.
  • Has a very great and user friendly interface showing you cool stats and wallet status. I will probably use this as my primary for mining profits due to the cool interface.
  • doesn't have as many supported coins as ledger, but its solid for the big names (BTC, ETH, ZEC, DSH, LTC)
  • not sure about yubikey support - maybe someone who has one can comment here. ( I am still waiting for my yubikeys to arrive)

KeepKey

  • More expensive by about 30%.
  • you get what you pay for. They keep is more aesthetically pleasing and has a very pleasing flow for the hardware/software interface.
  • It doesn't support all the wallets that the ledger or trezor do, but it has many of the majors. (BTC, LTC, ETH, DASH)

Overall - I think my favorite is the keep key, followed by the trezor, then the ledger. Although i use all of them because of the nature of each one. The ledger is the fastest to support new fetures. The trezors are less expensive, the keep keys are more expensive and support the least number of coins.

Purpose of CryptoGram:

Currently in the crypto space it can be difficult to remember what you have discussed or been thinking from one week to the next. The rapid development of, and many changes in the space keep everyone on their toes. Now that I have been financially involved in the space for roughly a year, I realize that I would love to have my thoughts from 2017 written down somewhere. I believe having this information will help me stay focused, avoid repeating past mistakes, and hopefully help some other people, (anyone who decides to read this,) from making those same mistakes.

Briefly, I need a place to record my train of thought and that place will now be dubbed "CryptoGram"

My thoughts on the structure of this post are:

  • About 500 words.
  • Frequency of once a day to once a week.
  • Each post will have a number and date.
  • A snippet of top 5 cmc coins for price reference. (state of the market)
  • I will always use these 5 tags, (unless of course there are drastic changes, but for now these will be the tags!)
    • bitcoin cryptocurrency ethereum crypto life
